Just wanted to see anyones experience?

Bro are you serious? Im not even in this process and understand for any Federal position in the U.S government, you are at the mercy of where they assign you for duty. I just accepted a tentative offer for a DOD position located North East, with no relocation reimbursement and I'm in Texas (majority of federal openings do not have relocation reimbursement allotted for people who aren't currently Federal employees). HSI is the same way as every other Gov't position and DOD civilian position.. You apply with the understanding (sign a mobility agreement stating you'll go anywhere as required and ordered) your duty station can be anywhere. Did you really think you wouldn't get a border town given all the crap going on in the Southern states near/at the border?

If you apply to HSI, DEA, FBI, ICE, or any other federal agency that deals with drugs, trafficking, human interdiction there is an almost certainty you will be given a border state as your first duty location when you EOD. With the Federal government, generally you are on the bottom end of the totem pole for the first few years, and then it pays off in the long run.

      No entirely true.

FBI, DEA, USSS, Dept. of State don't necessarily prioritize the border like HSI does.

  • Hey thanks for your thoughts. I know for a fact, as stated before in this thread, applicants who were cleared for hire were going to at least one of their geographic preferences. The timing just didn’t work out I guess and the agency is going in different direction now filling those border slots first. I’m ok with it. There are three geographic preferences asked on the job application and thought one of them would be considered. Also, these decisions (sometimes) to relocate involve a family decision not just what “you” want.

You're right desperate sounds a bit harsh. I guess what I meant was people willing to take almost any location.

jazz77 I think the word should be "willing" or "able"

Don't get me wrong, I think that offering those who choose places NYC, Boston or DC a border location for the final offer is messed up. However, some may be willing and able to accept.

I agree with that. I guess my point was that the powers that be have realized there are enough applicants who fall in that group that they don't seem to mind losing applicants who made it through the process.

I don't think "desperate" is harsh. It's literally someone willing to take any position offered, regardless of quality of life outside of work, family situation, etc. Literally, they could be offered Antarctica, and some of these guys would jump simply because it's a fed LEO position. Hell, maybe if I were still in my 20's or maybe even 30's, I might be more desperate too, but alas, I'm not. The older I get, the more I realize that quality of life trumps anything else, including money. If that weren't the case, I'd still be working in healthcare be using my doctorate.

  • The cookie crumbles differently for everyone. Some people get their preferred duty station and other than a long vacay to southeast Georgia, there's little disruption to their families. Others have to uproot and move to a dusty violent border town where half the residents are the G and the other half are smugglers. And then there are the lucky ones, the very few who get a windfall location, like straight to a one-person interior duty station that no one in the SAC office wanted, where the RAC is four hours away and its all task force (nothing is more cherry than statting the hard work of other people). The G is like a slot machine- pull the lever and a few will be surprised, very surprised, as to what happens, but most just frown..

And the god has spoken. I for one always appreciate a solid Ratatatat post.

  • Does anyone know if ICE sends out actual poly fail notices or should I just go with the examiner calling me a violent criminal mastermind? It’s been close to 30 days with no follow up so figured id ask. Id like something in writing before I give up the ghost entirely with HSI

RetiredVet19 its called his examiner didn't like him for whatever reason, and thinks he has Hannibal Lector sitting in the exam chair in front of him. Theres a reason why these don't hold up in court (IE the person accused is a current cop surrounded by supervisors, and other officers through the day contradicting the accusation).

RetiredVet19 Levithane the big punchline here is I am in fact an investigator in a violent crime unit as my current job. They were aware of that beforehand as well lol.

Stay Salty VB Yup can relate I was a State Parole officer (before voluntarily resigning in good standing for another job) and also did BI's for the agency. The person who administered your test is clearly a moron, like if you're going to accuse someone at least make the accusation something that isn't the exact opposite of their occupation.

      Miami more so than Houston.

  • I completed my polygraph earlier this month. I submitted the equip back in November and have not heard anything from my background investigator. I was recently told that my file is with the entry on duty section for review, but not entirely sure what that entails. Anyone in the same boat or know more or less what that (entry on duty section for review) means?

  • Krisown123 I have not spoken to my BI. They advised me that my file was given to a BI in November, and then in January I was notified to take a poly.

    • I asked for a status on my application today. The last email I got from them was on 10/3/2022 and it said they received my medical documents and it was submitted to their medical affairs unit.

”Please be advised that your medical file has been summitted to the Medical Affairs Unit (MAU); the review process can be rather lengthy. We appreciate your patience through the process. Once, MAU has made a final determination, you will be informed accordingly.
Please be advised that our agency is currently experiencing a hiring surge, so the medical process may become lengthy. Furthermore, the delay is due to a shortage of personnel and ask that you please accept ours sincere apologize.
Should any additional information be needed, you will be contacted.
      Respectfully,

      Pre-Employment Clearance Section – [ks]”

New York and Newark are definitely attainable, as those offices always have vacancies. Philly less so, but a lot of applicants under this announcement have received offers for interior offices that have vacancies.

    • Just so I can get a feel for it, like or comment if you've been in medical limbo for ~10 weeks or more. Just looking to see how much company I'm in....
