  • Correct this isn’t an announcement for current fed it’s for entry level thus the GS 5/7. Recent graduates and non fed.(unless you can stomach that cut down to a 7…many have)

    • Is there anyone that can comment on if it was worth it as a SA with another agency to take the big GS downgrade and jump to HSI through an entry level announcement?

I think that’s subjective to where you are currently and what your goals are career wise. If you can stomach the wait and your are a GS13; I would wait for a lateral or at least a 9 posting before coming over.

If you are already an SA, then I would wait for a lateral announcement. If you have a family to support then I would not take the demotion. If you are single and are trying to escape a toxic agency, then I would seriously consider going for the entry level one and pushing for a 9-10.

However, there are other options. FBI hires at a GS 10. If you are a 12 or a 13, then they would probably bring you in as a 10 - 10, which is about 104000 at the least (RUS).

I personally would wait for a lateral 1811 announcement. HSI is a great agency, but there are others out there.

My medical follow-up documents were sent in on 11/01. They confirmed receipt on 11/17 and said my stuff was forwarded to the medical affairs unit for review and recommnedation. On Monday, I received the medical standards waiver option letter.

Time lines seem to be all over the place for med stuff. Just glad I know they got everything

I busted to a 9 for HSI, and then busted to a 9 again after climbing back up when I applied to an entry level announcement elsewhere and accepted it.

Each time I've busted down, which is 3 now, it was a very calculated move that I knew was the right move to get me where I one day wanted location-wise, and with an Agency I would be happy with. And each time it was a tough decision, as I wasn't leaving an agency or job I disliked, but there was at least one reason to leave (location, limited career prospects, so on).

My only advice having done it and having most of these moves playing out like I projected, to my benefit, is that don't let the pay cut be the only reason you don't make the jump to an entry level announcement, HSI or other. If you can live on the temporary pay drop, then don't let that hold you back. Of course, if that pay cut is a problem for you and your family (if you have one), then that's a whole different discussion.

Besides, if you're a low step 12, you're made whole in a year with an 11 with steps, and If you're a low step 13, two years or so. There's the opportunity cost of spending the time getting back up to a 13 that could have been steps in your current grade, but I mean the difference between being a 13/2 and a 13/5 if I had stayed isn't insignificant. But it was moot in my situation, since any 13 to me is very good pay, and it's ultimately the difference between me retiring a 13/10 if I stayed with HSI vs a 13/9 having busted down again for my current agency, if I leave when I'm eligible. Each time, the pay cut and lost time in grade and other losses were worth the reason I was jumping ship and busting down.

But yeah, I'd say if money isn't a sticking point, don't let it stop you. But conversely, there has to be a reason or play to jump. If you're at a good agency in a good location that you enjoy the job, I wouldn't jump just to 'see what HSI is like' if it was me. But if you're a USSS guy who hates your life or something, then send it.

Will they match current pay? That is to say, if I'm an 11 step 01, would they offer 7 step 10 to approximate current salary? Or does it go on case by case basis?

They have to match so you would be a 7/10.

Would be a 7/10, roughly a 9/8, and then go from there.

    • Thanks for the insight battlewagon.

      • Age is a factor too. I’m in great shape still but 40yrs old. I know I can’t kick this can down the road too long if I am going to make a move. Can retire at 50 but planning on going to 57.

Yeah I mean I wouldn't sweat that. We had guys older than that in my academy, and as far as career longevity goes, there's little reason you have to be doing anything intensely physical (or even remotely) once you're on. You should, but don't have to.

Not sure who you are with now, but HSI is a good alley-oop to the OIG world once you're tired of callouts and things that do suck as you get older.

      • Hopefully with the holidays behind us, we see a little more movement on these applications.

It’s kind of subjective. It was really easy for some, and others I know who were extremely well qualified flunked. Just prepare yourself in the manner you’re most comfortable with typically preparing for an exam. It’s not any obscure sort of knowledge I’ll say that.

      • I guess the holidays did slow down the process. Just received an email to confirm my PFT location.

      • Anyone know the FLETC academy dates for HSI classes this year? Has CITP and HSI been combined or is it still two different courses? 22 weeks long total?

you can't combine them, too many other agencies use CITP as their intro/basic and follow it up with their agency specific training.......

Agencies are starting to combine CITP in their own training and have it as a CITP equivalent. DEA, FBI, USPIS already have that equivalent, and I believe NCIS is in the process of making their own as well. I heard HSI and USMS was floating that idea at some point.

Sheridan1 I had not heard that, but given that everyone prefers having their own sandbox to play in, it makes sense.... FBI, USPIS have always been that way, not sure about DEA....

In order to combine the two and run there own program, an agency would have to get the funds to open a brand new academy facility somewhere else. I doubt HSI has the budget to do that and since both FLETC and HSI are DHS, it kind of makes sense for DHS' investigative arm to be at a DHS facility. However, I do agree that some of the course could be shaved off by about 5 to 6 weeks. Postal Inspectors do it in 16 weeks.

      • Debating whether I should throw in for the newest announcement as well, my TO is for a 9 under the current one and the newest caps at a 7. I go for a poly this week and only have that and PT test to complete. Would I be screwing myself reapplying under the 7 announcement?

Just apply to it and keep it as a backup just in case, I applied to it too. The new announcement does not affect any previous announcements you’re in the process with. If for whatever reason you get screwed over with eligibility for whatever reason you will still have some sort of backup.

Also good luck with your poly on Friday, got mine in early Feb, hope we both get through and get in one of those April or May classes

      • Hey! Any recommendations on writing a resume for this? It looks like my go-to resume will not be adequate. I found a website that talked about listing every job I have had for the last ten years. Is that something I have to do? Any help would be appreciated.
