  • Here’s my timeline:
    April 2022 info session
    May 2022 Application
    August 2022 NOR 5/7
    Jan 2023 Interview Scheduled

Patience is key but I’m excited to move along! Congrats on Medical and background. Do they wait to conduct background until you finish everything else? How does that work. I’m in two different federal processes and I’m trying to gauge when I need to tell my department.

Similar timeline as you except I still haven’t been contacted to do background, did my medical appointment in December. This process is ridiculous to be honest.

    • March 22 - info session
      March 22 - application
      May 22 - referred
      May 22 - interview email
      July 22 - interview
      July 22- interview passed email
      September 22 - TOL
      October 22 - medical email
November 22 - medical appointments completed

Never was contacted for background, I have a previous clearance from another agency. Standby to standby.

Honestly, not really. Someone I know who graduated 2 classes ago had his background done in 3.5 months. He was a vet, with a degree and no LE experience. I know current feds who have been waiting 6+ months to clear background. Everybody is different.

            It’s super random.

I’m a non-fed, no current clearance, and my background only took about 3 weeks from beginning to end.

My BI made it seem like it is. I met him yesterday. He said he would get mine done NLT Friday. I am current LEO. When will OPM clear me? That’s uncertain. But after Friday it’ll be out of his hands.

Also, he said once you’re in the background phase you’re pretty much in. They don’t refer them to candidates unless they weren’t going to hire them.

After you meet your BI, sit back and chill.

Interviewed in Aug in Arlington, VA and was notified in sept that I passed…crickets since then. In the passed email it said if nothing in 5 months to email. So waiting a few more stressful weeks.

I've been checking my emails constantly. I know I have about another month before it hits the 5 month mark when they say to contact them.

How much of getting selected once you are on the hiring list is political and it’s about who you know?

          • Question for anyone who is current LE. What are your motivations for going over to the federal side? I don't think the pay is much better depending on what department you are with, so I am just curious.

Yea, a while back the Feds used to have a huge leg up with pay. Lately, it seems the locals are beefing up the pay and the Feds are climbing the pay ladder at a snails pace. Not to mention the retirement cuts your top out pay A LOT. Mobility is still the one edge the Federal agencies have. I'm out west and my family is in Florida. If anything goes south with their health, etc. I could move out there and not have to start over. So yea, like the others said, it's all about having that option to not have to start over.

          • 2020/2021 guys cleared for hire just received emails indicating that district won’t be known until after the offer is accepted. The email is pretty vague, but it appears they’re gravitating towards the FBI rule, that you won’t know where you’re going until you arrive at FLETC or shortly thereafter.

I can do 3 years anywhere in my sleep before putting in a transfer, but this is going to have a ripple effect on candidates who have huge families and have roots on where they’re at.

This process just got more interesting.

          • USMS DUSM Applicants,

Please note that this email contains important information regarding recent changes to the DUSM hiring process.

You may be eligible to attend one of the upcoming FY23 Basic Deputy United States Marshal Academy classes held at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, GA. Please note that receiving this email does not: 1) constitute a final offer, nor 2) guarantee your selection for a seat in this or any upcoming class. We are currently evaluating your record to see if you are still part of the “ready to select pool,” based on the vacancy to which you applied, and the expiration date of your medical exam and/or background investigation.

As previously noted, the process for hiring our DUSM Candidates has recently changed. If you are selected for a DUSM position, going forward, the new process will be as follows: A final offer will be provided; however, a post-Basic Deputy U.S. Marshal graduation duty location will not be identified at that time. You may be notified of your duty location before you report to FLETC or after the BDUSMi class has started.

Please respond to this email, by COB Monday, January 23, 2023, if any of the following have changed and/or if any of the information needs to be updated. A non-response means you are still interested in the position and no changes need to be made. A response is required if:

You are no longer interested in a DUSM position, please advise the team immediately by responding to this email.

You are overseas, or on an extended detail, and unavailable, please respond to this email.

You have any medical updates, please reach out to [email protected].

You have updated contact information (address, phone, email, etc.) from when you applied (or if you haven’t updated previously), please respond to this email.

You have a preferred location (Please note, if you applied to the Recent Graduate announcement, your locations are limited to the locations you selected during the application phase of the process.)

*Remember, this was a nationwide announcement and hiring locations are determined based on the operational needs of the USMS. Your desired office location is merely a preference. The USMS is unable to guarantee or promise any preferred location(s). The USMS makes no guarantee that you will be placed in any one of your desired locations. If your desired location is filled or not available, we may offer you a position anywhere in the nation.

As a reminder, this position is entry-level and set at either the GL-5 or GL-7 pay scale. Therefore, you will only be offered a position at the grade level you applied to, and are qualified for, from step 1 to step 10. Please review your Tentative Offer Letter for information on which grade you were deemed qualified.

All correspondence should be sent to [email protected].

            Thank you,

Yeah I will definitely turn the offer down if they won’t tell me a location until after graduating FLETC. They want total commitment and with already a substantial pay cut, the not knowing location let will be the mail in the coffin. Guess we will see how this plays about but I guess this will eliminate a lot of the competition for everyone else

I have no clue. I had the same question as I haven't been told im cleared. But HR isn't known for always updating people of their status.

          • Are we sure this isn’t just a formality, stating you’re clear for hire? I’ve read in older threads guys sent in their preferred location list. Is this not it?
