Anyone else apply for the IRS Special Agent position that closed about a week ago? Let’s keep a thread for updates, questions, etc.

  • #2
Applied after the amendment of the announcement. From all the agencies with a 1811 component, IRS CI is the best fit for me.

I did OK on the SA Assessment… I’ve never done enforcement work, and I wish I had answered differently in some of the situational questions. I’m hopeful that I’ll make it to the proctored exam phase.

    Timeline so far:
    1. Application Received: 08/09/2021
    2. Phase 2 Email: 08/13/2021, Job Simulation / SA Assessment Complete

VT2k15 - how long was the gap between the Phase 2 completion and results?

Couldn’t find any helpful resources on the SA KASE exam either. I wonder if it’s anything like the Revenue Officer non-proctored exam.

      8/9 Results

and the "either you know it or you dont" kinda worries me lol. I hate going blind folded into something

VT2k15 were you an accounting major? There is a lot of math/accounting/logical reasoning as well as a written portion on it.

Was not an accounting major. My experience comes from the business and commercial practices. Dealt with accounting, but from my aspect it was more numbers involved with business practices.

What's up everyone! I also applied to the last posting on on 7/21/21. This is my second time applying hoping for better results this time.

How did you end up doing last time? Did you fail the KaSE?

Yup I have to wait a year to retake it. It's still not quite a year but I was hoping with how long the process takes by then it will be. If not I'll have to wait apply to a future announcement.

Anyone have any information on the medical exam, specifically on uncorrected vision? I have 20/20 corrected vision but my uncorrected is probably worse than 20/200. Are they willing to grant a waiver for uncorrected?

I'm not sure about the IRS, but I know other agencies probably don't do waivers; specifically the DEA when I asked the recruiter.

For the medical exam, you'll go through the series of tests. I can't remember if at the end of the exam or a few weeks later, you'll get notified if you need follow-ups for anything to get a waiver. I know a few agents that got waivers for eyesight.

Nothing yet. They used my phase 2 results from the 2020 announcement. I’ve been studying for my CFE which hopefully has some overlap with the KASE.

Received notification that I passed phase 2. I have a degree in accounting, so I’m sure that I’ll get the authorization to sit for the SA KaSE (phase 3).

I’m anxious… I felt ok taking the SAEE and surprisingly failed even with study time.

Congrats! I was also an accounting major and have a CPA so I should have no issues getting past the qualifications review. I applied before the amendment and haven’t heard anything since 8/9, which was the date I got the passing email.

GS 9 for IRS is too low and underpaid for people working complex financial investigations. Even FBI (meme agency) starts at GS 11. You don't even have guaranteed LEAP like every other FED LE.

Get your crap together IRS. I guess this is because this agency has to deal with politics and is underfunded when you get certain political party that hates paying taxes and vice versa.

Didn’t you apply for the position? A lot of the information you stated is incorrect. I suggest you do your research before you talk.

What information is incorrect? That FBI starts at GS11? Ok they start at GS 10. Still higher than IRS for a meme agency. Still don't get why you are arguing with me about being underpaid. You don't want to be paid more? lol.

Go look up IRS policy, it's available for public. You don't get LEAP if you don't work 50 hours average.

IRS has been furloughed multiple times due to politics.

            1. GS-9 with LEAP and Locality was a match for my private sector pay in Big 4 Accounting, and regardless, you'd only be GS-9 for a year. And six months of that would be you at the academy learning how to do the job. If GS-9 is too much of a pay cut for you, well, that sucks, but that's an issue almost everyone taking an 1811 position has to face.

            2. LEAP starts on the first day of the job. The difference being is it's IRS-CI policy that instead of getting paid just for
sitting around on the couch with the government phone like other agencies, every IRS-CI agent works their LEAP.

            3. FBI starts you at GS 10, then you're at 11 and 12 for 2 years each before your 13. Almost all 1811 agencies hire at GS-7/9 other than FBI. Does GS-10 pay more than GS-9? Sure. Is that enough to pick one agency over another? Up to you and your situation.

I couldn't find anything. On Fedsoup some people said memorize basic accounting formulas. I'm just going to go blind and take the test.

I bough an accounting textbook and a Treasury Enforcement Agent prep book. I hear that the questions are very different than any prep materials out there, but it's safer than going in blind.

When did you have until to take the Kase? 10/20 also? If so, we are probably all on the same timeline.
