    Hello,

I just took my written test and PAT today and had a question.

I’m thinking about getting my masters degree in public administration and it’s all online at an accredited university. It being online, do you think it would be too much if I was in the academy and going to school for my MPA? It’s a 12 class program.

I would say it would be too much. I went to a police academy here in Northern California, Stanislaus County back in 08/09. 6 Months and it was basically 6 days a week 5AM-5PM(coming in on Sat even though they say it’s Mon-Fri. 8-5) and TONS of book work and busy work when you get home. I felt like I barely had time to shower and eat at night. I couldn’t imagine working on my Masters at the same time. But some people can function on almost no sleep.

Although the academics may not be that hard in the academy, you will be placed under a great deal of stress. If I were going through that academy, that would be my total focus in life. The same with the FTU. You can go back to school when you get released from your field training.

Thank you guys for the information. I will see how the sheriff department goes and make my decision whenever I get a bit further in the process

Wait until you are done, I just had to finish a masters class while starting my academy and it sucked real bad.

There is absolutely no way. I know Riverside is a high stress academy so even though it may not be academically tough, you will literally be too stressed out with your academy stuff to be able to deal with anything else.
