  • Patrol to cyber/physical security investigations

Anybody out there have any advice on how to transition from a 22 year patrol career to either of these specific career paths? Training, Certificates, On-line learning, Schools, etc?

    Thank you in advance

I don't work in investigations, but I do work in state/local/government doing IT/Electronics/Telecommunications for Fire/Police. I finished my graduate degree in InfoSec and had hands-on software training in a classroom setting. I was working on my certifications for the field, but slacked off after finishing the degree and working through the process to get into the feds. The first place to start would be at looking to get your CompTIA Security+ (Intro to security but everything you need to start) and then branching out to do the EC-Council (CEH) Certified Ethical Hacker and working up to the (CISSP) Certified Information Systems Security Professional eventually. We just lost our IT Networking guy, to another big company and for a lot more pay, because he recently obtained his CISSP. I have a bunch of friends working in the field and they love the job and pay.

I did my classroom penetration testing training through EC-Council for the Certified Ethical Hacker. I can say that that is a great class for "White Hacking" because you will learn the tricks, techniques, and tools that "Black hacks" use to compromise and steal data. You can register and do the class online, which is how we did it through the University. It lines everything out step-by-step and even has the digital sandbox with various Windows and Linux OSs to play around with. I think we paid around $250.00 for the Student Price.
