  • The real shame is not just they promote the unfit like this sot, but that feckless GS15s coddle and protect them. For years too- despite all the red flags and complaints. And they could not care less about the impacts to the field and the ashes left behind.

Precisely why the level of dysfunction is what it is....
What a long strange trip its been.

Interviews just finished up. It should be a week or so before reference checks begin.

        • They start the background before the pre-basic orientation?

            • Been awhile since Rat posted something disparaging about FWS. Must be on vacation. LOL

              • It's called "permanent vacation."

              • But seriously, do you want the truth... or just stardust and unicorns?

Because if you want the truth, it's this: very few people currently there would recommend the agency for anyone looking to work for a well managed, professional organization.

What a long strange trip its been.

                • Managers with Asperger condition or personality disorders get a pass I suppose, at least to a certain extent. But there are people in positions of power who have no excuse. They know better. How they can look themselves in the mirror is God's own private mystery...

                  • Has anyone heard that offers are going out?

                    • Offer calls have indeed begun. Good luck to all in the running.

                      • I got an email today that they forgot to have me fill out a form and to fill it out and send it back. Hopefully they wouldn’t ask for this unless I was getting a call soon. #fingerscrossed

Chill, dude. You're getting yourself all hyped up about a big nothingburger.

Yes, some of you will be getting 'the call' soon. The nice lady will wish you congratulations, and maybe even ask what was unique in your background that separated you from the other 10,000+ applicants. This will make you feel very pleased with yourself.

On your first day at orientation, presenters with important sounding titles will welcome you aboard and say things like, "You are now the tip of the spear of the most elite wildlife agency in the world" and "our criminal investigators are among the best" and other self-fawning platitudes like "there is nothing more noble than protecting that which cannot protect itself." You will be told repeatedly how you are the best of the best, even the 26 year olds who haven't done much other than college and a couple years opening boxes at the airport. The unmerited arrogance is part of the indoctrination process, just like a fraternity.. a secret society.. a cult.

After the academy, you will go to training stations. At first, it will all be very exciting. State officers and other feds will ask how you got hired, what your background is, and in their eyes you will see that little glint of wistfulness you used to have. But not anymore. You now have the prize job, with the lore and gloried past of agents riding majestic steeds down a Montana creek bed, hot on the trail of a grizzly poacher...

                          Actual agent recruitment photo, btw.

Days will become months and months will become years. That's when the hidden truths slowly begin to reveal themselves. They are subtle at first, like how your cases may not be priority with your local usao, because trafficking of antique sea turtle jewelry isn't the same as trafficking of children. Like how when it comes to how things are handled internally, 'skeevy' is not the exception, it's often the rule. Like how weak and feckless the powers are when it comes to addressing problems and problem managers because they see what they want to see, hear what they want to hear, believe what they want to believe. Like how they want agents to make big cases but not leave their desks. Like how you spend 1000x more time sitting in smog filled Chicago or LA traffic or dealing with stupid emails than on a boat or in the woods. Like how dysfunctional and toxic the family is, how little camaraderie there is, how everyone is keeping book on everyone, and how openly spiteful management is towards the proletariat. Like the futility when you realize 96% of the earth's mammal biomass is now comprised of humans, pets, and livestock and despite all the efforts, whatever endangered species don't wiped out from poaching in the next fifty years will get wiped out from climate change. One day, you will look back with rose colored glasses, to the time you got 'the call', and just shake your head....

                          • In a nutshell: Show up at EOD and don't take crap from anyone. Create a lot of "noise". Management will see your "potential" and you will move right up the chain. Who cares if you know the difference between a crap and a catfish. What matters is your ability to be loud as a motorbike....

Gee Rat. The uppers with FWS DRLE say the same thing. I always wonder how many FWOs aren't allowed to leave their refuge, yet they are supposedly "the best of the best" in terms of wildlife law enforcement.....
