You can get hired in California if you are a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.
Going too far is half the pleasure of not getting anywhere

      Citizenship

I don't know of any LE agencies in Alabama that will waive the U.S. citizenship requirement.

Fifty States and fifty different sets of rules and regulations. There is a thread somewhere on this board listing all States citizenship requirements for Police...just do a search.

But beware, just because the State does not require it, the individual department may insist that you be a US citizen to apply. The State "standards board" (or whatever they are calling it in each State) sets the minimum standards; the individual departments may set some extra requirements beyond those minimums.

The Illinois standards board requires Officers only to be Resident Aliens (Green Card holders), but I would say that the majority of departments in the State require full US citizenship for applicants. Interestingly, Chicago Police Dept, easily the largest dept in the State, does NOT require full citizenship, a Green Card is acceptable for CPD.

Here...I've even done the legwork for you...in this thread, post #8 lists all States and their requirements. Individual departments may have more stringent requirements than those set by the State.

          Hope this helps.
