  • Surveillance Jobs in the Fed

    Hello All,

I come from a Surveillance background (private industry) and now have been in the Fed over a year now doing investigations. In the near future I may start looking around for other opportunities and I have always been interested to know about Surveillance opportunities within the Fed. The only jobs I'm fully aware of at the moment are "Surveillance Specialist" and "Investigative Specialist" with the FBI, but beyond that I've had trouble finding any other Surveillance jobs in the Fed.

Anyone know of any or got links? I'm curious to check them out and see what type of experience they look for. I have technical surveillance experience, as in installing the cameras etc.., and also on foot and stationary Surveillance experience as well. I'd love to try to get back in the field in the future.

    I.G.

Going to depend on the agency. Larger agencies like FBI, ICE-HSI, have their own people for that. I'm in a smaller agency and our 1811s do their own surveillance, as is the case in the majority of fed LE agencies. The Bureau has particular surveillance teams/specialists, and ICE-HSI has Technical Enforcement Agents (correct me if I'm wrong) that are 1810s with badge and carry and are responsible for that kind of stuff.

Thanks for the info. I spoke with an HSI a few years back and he told me about that Technical Enforcement Agent position but back then he referred to it as a different name. I read the qualifications and it looks right up my ally. I'll have to be on the look out for that posting on USA Jobs.

Are you referring to the "Ghosts" of the FBI?

Yep. I’ve known a couple of them from different jobs.

I met one through my job as Well. Dude lives near me too, I just wish at the time I had surveillance jobs on my mind so I could have picked his brain a bit about his job. This was around the start of my current job unfortunately so new jobs weren't on my mind.

Guy was laid back, and I talked to him about a recent cyber attack on the US at that time and explained some computer stuff to him.

Only Fed LE full time surveillance gigs I know of are with the FBI. HSI TEOs are technical surveillance officers, which is a different specialty. There are other surveillance jobs out there, but not ones I am aware of that are full time and Fed LE.

              Bump

So the FBI in the past year has posted for an Investigative Specialist and Surveillance Specialist job, but they've only been "FBI Only" opening unfortunately. Recently I've seen a decent amount of Supervisor Surveillance Specialist and Supervisor Investigative Specialist openings but still no public announcement. Everything has been "FBI only". I have saved what the announcements look like, so if anyone would like me to post them for historical record, I can.

Secret Service has a Technical Security Officer job I applied to, got offer for interview but turned down. They appear to be like counter-surveillance/counter-security and make you go to FLETC then their training center for a total of 21 weeks combined, which seems odd for a position that's mainly technical but I guess they too are like regular Secret Service Agents but focus a bit more on technical things like sweeping hotels and cars etc...
