Vision correction surgery is one of the best things I think someone can do for themselves, regardless of federal applications. I got LASIK in 2003 while going through hiring for Secret Service Uniformed Division and ended up going from 20/200 in one eye and 20/100 in the other to seeing 20/20 in one and 20/15 in the other. I am going through hiring with ATF right now and just had my medical exam last week. The vision test there actually had me at 20/13 in both eyes! Not sure how my vision has ended up improving over the years, but I sure am thankful for these many years without needing to rely on contacts and glasses. For those with the opportunity and the means to get their vision corrected, I *highly* recommend it!

No. However, you can file any expenses related to job searching on your taxes.

For example the fitness test, panel interview, medical, and poly would all be seperate events that they would compensate you for. Not all of us live inside the city that we are testing at.

For example, I'll be driving 7 hours round trip, since they want me at the test site early and there is a time zone change I would have to leave my house at 3am in a 2 piece suit to make it to the test site on time. Obviously that's inviting Murphys law so I'm getting a hotel room. Easily a $250 trip just to test. It's not going to break the bank by any means but that's an example.

It's quick if you have no follow-ups. If you need a follow-up, expect anywhere from 3 weeks to a millenia. Give or take a decade.
Here's one example of many different examples.
(apologize for the repost but it's been awhile since anyone posted a Timeline on here I think)

              Applied - 5/2/14 (notified SAEE 6/2)
              SAEE - 6/11/14 (notified passed 6/16)
              SPI - 6/23/14 (notified passed 8/11)***
              COE - 8/11/14 (GS-9)***
Security Packet turned in - 8/18/14
              Security Interview - 8/28/14
              Polygraph - 10/20/14 (called on 10/1)
              Background started - 1/26/15
              Medical Exam - 2/3/15
              Home Interview - 2/3/15
              Med follow up rec'd - 2/24/15
Med follow up submitted by Dr- 3/9/15

I hate that for whomever that is...that time line is ridiculously fast, and then a DQ.

So many variables out of our control, all you can do is workout like crazy and pretend you didn't apply until you're notified of movement.

That's it for USSS. I'm more or less sticking around in the forum to see what all happens to folks from my app group and whether they get picked up, etc. And I try to drop some info when I think it'll help since I'm here.
Several family circumstances have changed / developed since my initial application so it's not as opportune for me to move across the country right now unfortunately. It's a circumstance thing as opposed to a desire thing. I love my current FLEO gig so wasn't running from anything anyway. Just the opportunity to move up and onward.
Still eyeballing a couple other options though...

Bayranger is a legend in these parts. Without him and Bronc, there is no USSS SA hiring forum.
