  • So, I haven't been on in quite a while, but I've had some interesting developments I thought I should share. I took the TEA in 11/09, had the initial interview, panel interview and gave the written sample. I was then sent the ubiquitous BQA letter at the end of 2010.

A few months ago, I got a letter from USSS asking if I wanted them to take another look at my application. I asked them to do just that (what does it cost, a stamp?). A few weeks later I was contacted by the local field office and e-mailed the 54 page background packet. I just finished this and sent it off.

Has anyone else been BQA'd then had the Service offer to take another look?

      • When you're in the training academy, what locality pay (if any) do they use?

Also, could someone please verify the estimated Training Schedule:

12 Weeks @ FLETC doing CITP
18 Weeks @ Maryland (outside DC) doing Secret Service Specialized Training
Then off to your 1st Field office.

          • Any movement, anywhere?

Wow- there has not been a whole lot happening in this process in some time... I was looking through the progress updates (thanks again for keeping those running-- it has helped me make a couple choices in the last few weeks) and there are people who have been waiting on the call for almost 18 months! Is that how back-logged the hiring lists are (I was told first-on, first-off), or are people getting leap-frogged for some reason?

            Comment

            • I've always been told that it's not a "first on first off", but a "most qualified get picked". Ex. I'm all done with the process and ready to picked from the shelf for a class of 24. If 24 more qualified (or they want a more diverse class) come onto the shelf with me then I get pushed aside till the next hiring panel.

                Correct.

That sounds logical, but we're talking about a lot of time lapsing for some people-- that can and does change how qualified people are for this job.
For example-- I have a BA (general studies) with a good G.P.A., six years of experience working in insurance and financial products (on the back-end dealing with the computer support/automated calculations/tax implications, etc) and a year and a half in corrections. This was good enough to get me through the process and on "the shelf", but isn't really comparable to those who have doctorates in law, special forces experience, etc.
However, I am moving forward with my life (not betting the farm on getting "the call" vs a BQA letter) and start training for the State Patrol in two weeks. My application says BA, 6yrs financial & some corrections. In six months I will be LE certified, which (in my mind) makes me an even better candidate, but my application won't have that information on it and I would be waiting forever even though I am that much more qualified.
I don't believe everything the government does has to make sense, but the way this process is set up (so drawn out and cumbersome) would lend itself towards a big 'ol list that names just get pulled off of and plugged into training camps. If there was some committee that arbitrarily picked "the best" that would allow for the favoritism that the rest of the process seems to screen out (the "can't work at the office that processes you" thing).

                  • anyone out there

I have only seen one person in the past few months who has said they got the call. I believe it was BKbrawler. Is this correct? Are there no calls going out, or just none to the people on this blog. I remember when I first started looking at this blog there were a number of people who got picked last spring in march or april time frame. Since then I have seen one. Has anyone heard anything promising? I called my field office last week and they told me to give them two weeks and they would try to have an update on my process. I shouldn't complain because my process took less than a year start to finish and now I have been waiting on the CALL since May. So compared to some people I am lucky. The budget crisis probably doesn't help our causes.

I think it was actually WVU05 who said he got into the class that began at the end of September, but except for that one mention of it, I didn't hear anything else. And the only thing we heard about the July class on here was one guy saying that he knew of someone else who had gotten into it. I keep wondering about any upcoming classes.....I've heard some rumors that there will be another class before the end of the year, and looking at the past several years, there's always a class in either November or very beginning of December (and one year it looked like there was both, although I'm sure that's not happening this year), but no idea if that's actually happening or when we might hear about it if it is.

I'm kind of in the same boat, I feel like my process went rather quickly compared to a lot of people so I shouldn't complain, but all this sitting around and waiting at this point is getting old, and having no information on when that might end doesn't help.

                      • Timelines

For those wondering about the hiring trends, I have definitely seen a decrease in number of classes/people getting the call. I've been on here quite a while and the economy has not benefited the class scheduling. A lot of that has to do with the fact that the budget is so screwed up that agencies do not want to schedule a class and then cut it after people have already put in their notice with their current job. On the whole 'in first, out first', I was told they rank you and then they take the top 20-22 males and 2-4 females for each class. For some thats a much longer wait than others. Hopefully the budget will come together and they can schedule more classes this year.

From your mouth to God's ears. It wasn't me unfortunately. I'll be taking my poly very soon so i'm at that step. I already have clearance, so that part may go quickly. I was also medically cleared by another agency. I was told by my FO that 2011 was closed, but that I should be ready for the 1st 2012 class.

I waited a long time from my TEA to my interview, but it has flown by since then. TheNameBob - I agree with you. From the time I took my TEA, I finished Grad school and made my application more valuable. The longer the app takes, the more valuable i'll make myself - hopefully joining a 2012 class.

I think they meant closed for them, meaning he/she is only at the poly stage so there is no way he/she can make it to a hiring panel. I had to read that twice too.

                              • I think the FO meant fiscal year. October started the new year for govt agencies.
