  • I have heard that if you make it through the entire process, then a job offer is extremely likely. When I asked the agent who did my initial interview about the process, i was told that you make it through the process on your own merits. I.E. If you pass a phase, then you move on to the next. Not until the process is complete and you get to the hiring panel do you begin to "compete" with the other applicants.

I have no scientific information and every situation could be different. But having made it through the entire process, I am very excited, but that excitement will be internal until the call comes. When the call comes, then I will breathe again lol. Until then, the phone is attached and on.

As for my wording, my intent was that I'll be appreciative to get the Panel interview, let alone make it through the whole process.
I got ya... thanks for the clarification. Thats what I thought you meant originally, but I did a double take when I saw the way you worded it. I agree 100% with you guys; its a privilege just to still be in the process. I never thought I'd get an invite for the TEA much less get through the poly. The waiting game is the worst part and it's hard to focus on other things when you're this close to your dream career. I'll be happy if and when that UNKNOWN comes up on my cell phone.

Until next time ladies and gents. Enjoy your turkey!

During the 2008 campaign USSS personel entered close to 600,000 overtime hours.
This of course includes agents, officers, and support/specialty posistions.

        • Panel Interview

Has anybody here been through the USSS panel and the FAMS panel?

Without going into details, can you tell me if the structure for both interviews are fairly similiar? Thanks.

            • Well, I got the call last week and they scheduled my Medical in December. I am under the assumption that if you make it this far, and you have noe problem with the BI, then you should be good to go. Anybody know what the average wait has been from the medical to the end?

That seems a bit excessive...is that info accurate?
That is the figure given to me by the RAC who did my initial. I don't think he was exaggerating either. First, you have to consider that UD's, for the most part, stay in Washington. Still a lot of OT to be had there during a campaign, but, I would think, not as much as Agents who are traveling to protect the major candidates all over the country. Not to mention the debates, party conventions, etc. That being said, I personally think its a stretch to say that GL7's and 9's were hitting that figure. But I can def see GL10's and up hitting it *during a campaign year*. Especially this last one.

There is another stipulation where anyone GL-13 and under can not make more in a given fiscal year than the assistant director of Homeland Security (not sure of the exact job title, so feel free to correct me), which is something like $169,000 p/y. This INCLUDES over time paid. The problem they ran into during the last election, though, is that guys who were at GL-7 and GL-9 were hitting that number only a few months into the year. When you hit that wall, what happens is that the money is held in escrow and paid to you in full in the next fiscal year. Kind of a weird way of doing things, and it sucks not getting that money when you earn it. But it is probably pretty sweet getting that huge check at the beginning of the next fiscal year.
Don't know enough about the Service to refute the actual amounts being paid, but I do know about the gov payroll and I find this very, very hard to believe.

The only thing I can promise you is that this is what I was told by the RAC at my initial. I gave him a weird look when he explained this and he admitted that it was a strange way of doing things and that the Secret Service is kind of a strange duck in terms of over time pay.

Is there anyone lurking on this board who works for the USSS that can verify this one way or the other so people don't think I'm crazy?

UD travels to the same events that Agents do. Anywhere the President goes there will be Uniformed Division working outer perimter. Who do you think checks every person that walks into the door at an event???
In addition UD gets OT even when it's not scheduled. Agents policy requires overtime scheduled in advance or they don't get the OT.
Agents work no where as much OT unless they are on a specific detail.
WFO agents get a lot of OT because they have a lot of protective assignments with there being so many diplomats in and out of the city on a regular basis.
At the end of the day UD has to work days off and tons of overtime to keep up with an average GS 9 and up.
Max out is 30 years @ 80k for UD. As an agent you will hit that in 3-5 years depending on what grade you go in at.

As far as the escrow account I have never heard of that. I'm not saying it's not true ,but agents would always say during the campaign that they are maxed on their ot hours and are working for free.
I would not worry about the money issue because as an 1811 with the Service you will be well taken care of and is a great gig.

                            • If you have any questions for the agents, the home interview is the time to ask them. I had mine recently and it was very informative and informal.

+1 Out of all the steps in this process, this is the least of your worries. It's an informal setting for you and/or your spouse to ask questions that haven't been answered so far. At this point they know what they need to know about you. I had one single friend have one. He said they just checked out his house and sat down with him to see if there were any unanswered questions. Mine was more for my wife. They just told her what to expect and explained the possible career paths. Just dress nice and be relaxed.
