It's been over a week since I submitted my SF 86. I know that is still early, but it seems that people here have been getting word for the panel in a matter of days.
I think it is an obvious bias against Marines!

      • No new vacancy for November it seems like. Interesting change of events.

It has been over 2 months since I submitted my SF86....not a word. It has been about 3-4 months between each step for me so far, so I'm not concerned yet.

A week is nothing; hang in there.

          • Thank you. 1811orBust told me the same thing. I hope things work out for us, slowly but surely.

The average fed makes 5 or 6 arrests a year. Get the doorkicking out of your system now, if that's what floats your boat.
If a Fed is only making a handful of arrests a year, then what is the point of such an intense training program for Agents? I have no interest in being a local police officer only because I don't want to kick down doors, or go on calls for pitty bull**** like neighbors dogs barking too loudly, I know Intelligence wise I'm smarter than that kind of work. My biggest worry is my size and no experience in LE. I appear slender, but I have good endurance and upper body strength, though running is not something I enjoy. Would you recommend a personal trainer to put on some muscle and for motivational purposes, or just find a friend to run with etc.?

You should be cautious with your word choice. Don't think so highly of yourself to think you're too good for local LE. I only say this because I've been doing it for nearly 8 years, and I guarantee you that there's a lot of people out there that couldn't do it. And just because you think you're "smarter than that kind of work" doesn't mean you'd be a good cop. There's a reason that many 1811's are former local LE officers. And that reason is because they are intelligent AND can handle the stress/demands of the job! Sorry for venting, but I take offense to that comment.

I have handled more than my fair share of barking dog calls, I have a masters degree and am currently a highly decorated detective. Does the fact that I started out doing that make you smarter than me? Dispatch doesn't have a list of IQ's and assign calls to those on the lower end of the spectrum. Everyone has to start out somewhere. Good luck trying to find a detective or chief who hasn't started out in the trenches taking those types of calls. Those calls give you experience in LE (which you stated you didn't have). I can't tell you how many times a stupid call has turned into a big case. If you don't believe me then just ask any of the other stupid locals on this board.

Law Enfocement is not a career that you can pick and choose what you are doing. You may want to think long and hard about that before you continue with this process. BTW alot of people who have a lot more experience than conducting background investigations decide how stringent and ardent the academy should be. They know what they are talking about, and they get to make the decisions in that regards. I strongly advise you don't question these things if you get to an academy.

I appologize for the comments, I didn't intend on offending anyone. I was trying to understand that comment that I was quoting where in one sentence, he talked about get all the door kicking out of your system now, because feds don't do that, and make a small amount of arrests per year. I hold all law enforcement, military, emergency response with the highest regards, so please don't think I have this elitist attitude. I know minor calls can escalate into larger things, and I'm not above being a police officer, I just didn't want to do that at the time.

You will find a lot of local/city cops jump 1811 for the pay, when you hit 13 its some nice cash. If you ask most of them, they were happier working patrol and making a difference on a daily basis.

I know multiple MD State Troopers who are SAs and the only reason they stay is for the $. If the pay was closer they would go back.

If I recall, Tim Mcveigh was stopped for a missing license plate. It is an example of how something small can lead to other things...its called good police work and you need to be smart to excel on the street. When you pull traffic, you never know what is going to happen, you need to be sharp and think on your feet.

Trust me, you talk like that at FLETC/JJRTC it will be a LONG 6 months. Most of your classmates/instructors worked the streets.
No, I understand, and take accountability for what I said. If people want to express their grievances they have with me over my comments, feel free too, but I did apologize, and I did not have any intentions of offending anyone.

I checked the SS website but couldn't find the answer to this question...Can an applicant initiate the application process with one semester left in college? Thanks guys.

I intially applied almost exactly six months before completing my master's degree and was told that I as long as I complete the degree that would be ok.

It's not a "crap-shoot" if you're qualified and tell the truth.

I think taking a paycut to get on with ATL PD shows your dedication to law enforcement, and there is no way it could be viewed as negative. Worst case scenario, you reapply in a few years and you'll be a shoe-in with some PD experience. Roughly 75% of my class is former state/local LE. The service likes LE experience. It is an LE job, so regardless of what the feel-gooders with no LE experience other than failed applications will tell you, LE experience is the most desireable trait you can have when applying to the USSS.

And "being a cop" is what the USSS SA job is. Anyone looking to use LE as a stepping stone to something else would be well advised to save their blood, sweat, and tears for something "more important".

Get on with a local PD and learn the street. Regardless of what you do in life, it will make you a better candidate. The average fed makes 5 or 6 arrests a year. Get the doorkicking out of your system now, if that's what floats your boat.
OK folks, I think I am about to do it. I am going to take the enormous paycut, make the career change, and hit the streets in the fine city of ATL! Hopefully I am cut out for it and this will be the beginning of a successful law enforcement career. I won't know until I try. It has been one of the toughest decisions I have ever made (leaving corporate, $80K, heading back down to $40K). I just tell myself it is a calling and I am doing the right thing.

Perhaps after I have a couple years of local experience, I will then at least be to the poly stage for the USSS, haha. I took the TEA back in April, so going on 8 months since I started the process. Who knows, after a couple years, I might decide I want to stick with local. Ultimate goal would be to become a detective if I did that.

If anyone else has previously been through these same types of decisions/experiences, I am all ears (career change, significantly less money, outcome, etc). I'm sure it will all work out like it should.

                              Thanks!

                              • Go for it! See if it's something you love more than your current career. Money is definitely not everything, and yet even that will come in time in law enforcement. You can always go back after giving law enforcement a shot, but if you never try it you'll never know. Best of luck.
