  • Turnover Rate and Retirement

Just out of curiousity, does anyone know what if any is the turnover rate for the SA position? If so what other agencies do some people leave the USSS to join? I wouldn't think many people would leave once they get this job, but you never know.

Also, I have never been in federal law enforcement, but was curious about their retirement. I know the rule about 20 years of service at age 50 or 25 years at any age. However, what happens if someone goes from one agency to another? For example, if someone started as a SA with the USSS and worked their for 5 years and then became a SA with the FBI, would their years of service have to start over or just keep accumulating?

I'm not too familiar with the federal retirement system, but I've read and heard a few things about the turnover rate. I recently finished reading "In The President's Secret Service." It's a new book that uses more than just a couple of people that are current and former USSS SAs as it's sources. I'm not a big ready but its an easy read. There's a section in it that talks about why SA's leave the agency. It seems that they are spread thin and get tired of being used and abused. One of the biggest complaints are that they are doing more work than they can safely handle (speaking of operations security), and they have a hard time successfully getting a transfer. They pretty much say that it's all political and who you know as to whether or not you'll get one. If they end up leaving the USSS I've heard that a lot of them leave for ICE or ATF.

My panel is in just a few days. Does anyone have any pointers or advice? I've been looking all over the internet for practice questions and I just hope that I'm prepared.

                • What's the deal with the writing sample? I've heard it's a recording that you need to basically transcribe. But are they looking for legibility or just that you gathered all the pertinent information and can read it back to them? Legibility could be a problem after all these years of typing and rarely writing by hand. I sort of have my own shorthand that I can write quickly and read back but it's not very legible.

The writing sample is pretty simple. Without giving away the details, its an audio file that you have to listen to and turn around and write a report on. Just know which facts are important. If you are not the neatest writer, you can make the 1st copy like chicken scratch, and then rewrite it. thats what i did. I made my notes and then made a final draft.

I had my panel 3 months ago and was told my poly should be within the next two months. That didn't happen so I spoke to my local FO and was told that recruiting for the most part was put on hold until after the UNGA and G8. This was by far the most difficult waiting portion for me so far. I'm ready for the poly but nervous about it. I've never taken one or been hooked to any kind of machine like that. I shouldn't have any problems, but that doesn't really take the nerves away.

                            • First time posting... great site with lots of solid information. I'm scheduled to take the TEA on 17 NOV. My question is related to the math. I've read on here that the math section is most comparable to the GRE/GMAT type math questions. I have been studying the ARCO, Treasury Enforcement Agent (11th edition) study guide. It seems like all the example math questions in here are: ratio, percentage, tax related, fractions, etc. I don't see much variation or questions about: sqaure root, radius, area, etc. I have less than 1 month to study and I just don't want to waste any time studying math questions that won't be on the TEA exam. I would greatly appreciate any advice from those who have taken the exam. Thanks.

                              • The ARCO is pretty much spot-on for the types of math questions on the exam. Read back through this thread for more info and opinions. Good luck!
