  • First time posting here but thank you to everyone who has provided information. I am currently going through the clearance process, so this thread has kept me sane. I know that this has been hit on a few times but what are the OA scores that have a difficult time getting a final offer?

Also does anyone know of current SA's that have a JD and work for DS?

1.) Completely depends on hiring. There were years when you could risk timing out and other years where they wiped out the entire register and then hired more people before they even knew they'd been added to the register.
2.) There's a decent amount of JDs running around, some fresh out of law school and some with good amount of experience.

  • Just to reemphasize what r0802l posted previously, I called HR today and was advised they’re short staffed, so if you recently passed the OA, you’ll get your paperwork in 4 weeks instead of 2. This is also applicable to the clearance process. Standby.

    • I apologize if this has already been addressed, but I can’t seem to find it..

Does anyone have an idea of when BSACs have started in the past? I understand it’s dependent on about a million variables, but I’m just wondering what time of the year the class starts. I’ve seen August and September thrown around in this discussion, but are there also Spring classes possible?

As far as I know, classes can start at any time of the year and there really isn't a consistent schedule set up year to year. I believe once you get on the register they will tell you when the upcoming classes are scheduled, if that is the classes/funding have been confirmed. Lastly, you have to attend orientation at FSI prior to going to CITP and BSAC, so if you were to look up the FSI schedule that will give you an idea of when a class may start. Hope that helps.

@Kermit Ruffin - I saw you inccluded the word "may" in your response, but just to add a bit more info fro everyone else: The FSI Orientation is sometimes a good indicator, but FLETC portions of the DSS BSAC are not coordinated at all with all of DoS' Specialist hiring. In the past, some BSAC classes have done the FSI orientation at the end of BSAC, or even during BSAC. They try to avoid this when planning BSAC class start dates, but it is possible for BSAC classes to start without FSI Orientation being the very first portion of training.

      • Anyone know if all the OAs have been completed, I haven’t heard anything since back in April when it stated I passed the QEP. Any insight would be appreciated!

        • Is there a residency requirement which mandates that you live within a certain mile radius of your assigned field office? Or, can you live as far away as you are willing to commute? I wasn't sure if there is some limit, especially if you are issued a government vehicle. Thank you.

          • Just curious if any current agents know about how many years it would take to hit annual comp of around $120K, including LEAP and a typical amount of overtime? I think I would be entering as an FP-6 Step 14, since I'm a current 1811. I'm in a high locality POD and make around 125K now... I know I'll take a hit for a while and want the job enough to consider it, but it would be helpful to know how prolonged the hit is going to be....

            Thanks!

Okay, I'll try my hand at this one.

I believe that, in order to make a consistent $120,000+/year, you'll need to look at being in the middle to higherish (steps 6+ probably) range of FP-03 if you're in the DC area (and if your job in the DC area comes with some overtime and/or some type of time and day differential. Not all do.).

You could also get there as an FP-04 if you're a higherish step on the FP-04 scale AND you're somewhere overseas with a high differential, like a hardship post.

You could get there a bit lower on the FP-04 scale if you're overseas at a high threat post with the extra differential and the additional overtime, I believe, but those assignments are, by nature, temporary.

Promotion rates are very, very different now than they were back when my husband was hired, so this timeline may not be correct now, but if you start at FP-06 step 14 then you will automatically find yourself at FP-05ish in one year, then automatically at FP-04ish in another year, and then the automatic promotions cease and you have to compete for FP-03 and above.

Promotions to FP-03 are getting very difficult from what I hear. Not sure how long it takes to get there at this point. I think my husband went from FP-06 to FP-03 in about five or six years, but those days may be long gone since the promotion rates are in the toilet. Which is to say - no one can help you predict when you might make FP-03, which is the pay grade that helps get you closest to your consistent $120,000/year target.

You can take a good look at these sorts of variable pay issues at:

              http://calculators.fsbiddingtools.com/paycheck.html

You can enter the 25% LEAP multiplier and play with the calculator in terms of location, etc.

          • Just got emailed by DS because the invitation to do the oral assessment went to the junk folder. So, if any other applicants waiting for invitations, might want to check your junk folder.

I BEXed in late July and was interviewed by an investigator in mid September. I feel like thats a pretty standard timeline plus or minus about a month for most people. Have you turned in your equip yet?

I passed BEX in August and my BI started about two weeks ago. It was just about 60 days from SF-86 submitted until I met with my investigator.

Have you received and completed your eqips?

They have to review that for discrepancies at the Rosslyn office before forwarding it to security who then reviews it again and assigns it to a case manager. I BEX'd in July, finished eqips two weeks later, had it bounced back twice, and met with my BI in early Oct.

I BEXed in Mid August and submitted the E-qip at the end of August. Have not heard anything further yet concern the security package, so at this point I assume that my information is complete and I just need to wait to be contacted...

            • Does anybody know if there is a set time window at DS for when a new agent may or may not have to re-complete CITP if they've already graduated from it but have not been employed as a LEO in the interim?

For instance... if a new hire had completed CITP several years prior to beginning with DS, but then took a hiatus from LEO work. Would there be a maximum window of time that could elapse before they'd be forced to repeat CITP prior to attending BSAC? I've seen agencies that have concrete policies for this and others that just make the call ad hoc. Suffice it to say, any sane man would bias towards avoiding the Brunswick metro area, given a choice...

I can think of several people who came to DS from 1811 jobs with NO break and service and they had to go back through CITP at FLETC. One even left his gun and badge locked up at FLETC (1811 through active duty then reserve status). If you get an offer try pleading your case, but I'd expect to go through it again, especially since you had a break in service.

Sure would have been sweet to not have to roll the dice on mat room MRSA again...

Class Coordinator: Gentleman, Keith is going home early. He had a bad staff infection. It's not MRSA.

Class: Sir, MRSA is a bad staff infection. Are you sure he didn't have MRSA?

When you say top third (6+ score)... Does that mean your score was above a 6 and in the top third or that the top third begins at 6? I walked away with a 6 after vet points and language, and I am genuinely wondering where that places me in the thirds.

The registrar will only tell you where you are in thirds (top, middle, or bottom).
                I'll show mine - I got a 6.5; it's top third.

Multiple processes can run concurrently, basically allowing you to use the higher score (and having the added benefit of not needing a new security or med clearance). Once you accept any offers with State, though, you are removed from all registers.

            • You are able to apply to a new announcement and still be able to retain a current score from 2018 announcement. Basically, it wouldn’t nullify anything. This benefits candidates who didn't score high enough this go around to get a class date who seek a higher O/A score IOT improve their chances during the anticipated 2019 announcement.

That's good news. With numbers like that and they'll empty the register twice over.

DSguy let's assume their will be 4 classes at 24 during FY20, isn't reasonable to think more than 96 applicants received a conditional offer and will ultimately make the register? If that's the case, how would they ever empty the register twice over?
