  • This may already be in this gigantic post - but can someone with overseas experience comment on how exactly bringing the family works? (Or at least tell me what page it's on)

Is there a special area for families to live...do families live with the locals...I'm just curious about family life and how it works in the foreign embassies.

    Thanks!

I was going to write something cute, but then changed my mind

Page 111 has some info. Use "search this thread" button and play with "family+overseas", "overseas+experience", etc.

Your family will reside with you unless it is unaccompanied tour.

        • DSS - U.S. Diplomatic Security Service - Websites

DSS - U.S. Diplomatic Security Service (U.S. Department of State)
Here is some information on the DSS. Most of you have probably already researched these sites. For the ones who haven't seen them - here they are. The DSS is the little known but far reaching federal law enforcement and security arm of the U.S. Department of State. Also see the video from CBS Evening News below.

          • Short of an unaccompanied tour, your family will reside with you. The accommodations vary by country, etc., but the housing is generally not bad and will be furnished. It's not as though you live in separate places.

                  • Are we seriously going to have posts every other day on here related to people not getting calls? I love reading the gouge here, but the obsessive posting is a bit much lol.

Have an expresso and relax . Otherwise, it could be a long 9 months.

Its not that some are obsessed, and im sure some are, but as for me, I like the excitement of the entire hiring process. I like seeing the joy in the next applicant text as he/she types I got the call. I hate seeing the frustration in other applicants text as they say they got the thin letter. Like I stated before, I like the hiring process because it keeps you on your toes. I currently have a job (Federal) so the pace of the process to me isnt an issue. It cant always be about our excitement about getting the job, and I like to have excitement to see some single mothers/dads struggling to make ends meet have hope as to completing another step in the process

                          Are you BEXing in Atlanta?

If you are speaking of that Company That's Name Shall Not Be Spoken or Written (coughblackwaterusacough), then I quit.

Call me bitter or whatever...those guys caused me a LOT of grief when I was in Iraq.

Yeah, but I'm not sure if the interest was for SAs or other jobs that now exist through State. Also, don't lose hope - make your choices based on how you see your future; sorry if my question was vague: that's why I asked in the first place!

I was being sarcastic at any rate. Are you BEXing in Atlanta? I'll be there Dec 9th.

                              • Congrats on your BEX invite. I believe that there is an effort to bring contractors in house. When applying for the SA position, I noticed there was at least one other position relating to security (security specialist) and the requirements were very tailored (3-5 combat/security experience in Iraq or Afghanistan, as well as other things that correlate with being a contractor in those respective regions).

I believe it was discussed elsewhere on this thread but Secretary Clinton thought it would be easy to just get rid of contractors, but the practical reality was that their services were needed. So they created those positions so that the contractors would be under the umbrella of State rather than a private company. I could be mistaken so if anyone has more accurate information, feel free to add or subtract.
