Long time reader, first time poster. I was part of announcement 18-5 and it has been 24 weeks since I've submitted additional information for my medical review. Has anyone else experienced this much of a delay with the medical review? I know things are backed up but 6 months seems excessive. For those who have had to wait a long time, is there any remedy other than to keep waiting?

        Thanks

Alexr3496 that’s absolutely crazy. The process is just so inconsistent from person to person. It really does almost seem like it’s all just random.

Thanks for the input everyone, I wasn't under the impression that I was the only one waiting a long time but it gives me a better idea of how long the potential wait could be.

Today marks a year I have been in this process I’ve decided to give it a few more months and if I don’t hear anything I am just going to withdraw my app and pursue other things. I have stayed put because I don’t want to complicate the BI even more but I just can’t continue to wait this long. It’s what I have always wanted to do is to work for the government.

Does anyone know if TSU is furloughed during this time? I know people have gotten their final offer e-mails but was thinking maybe those are sent out automatically.

I don't think anyone really knows to what extent the shutdown is effecting the Hiring Process. I had one Recruiter tell me everything is basically 100% halted until funding is enacted. Another told me that just MHC is closed, but other appointments/steps are continuing. Some people have gotten things scheduled, others have had things cancelled. Some people have been told EODs are still happening, others have been told they're delayed. It's really all over the map. That's kind of the Hiring Process is general though (not just during the shutdown). You talk to two different "officials" and get two completely different, often contradictory, answers.

          N.N.

That's CBP as a whole, where even the best answers are only 95% right...90% of the time...in 85% of circumstances.

As far as OFO recruiters go, unless things have changed recently, virtually all OFO "recruiters" are part-timers with little/no formal training in recruiting. At least with those working the field that the average person is likely to meet at any local outreach event. The national/regional guys accessible by email might be different.

At best, you're probably seeing well-meaning people with different backgrounds and experiences answering questions based on the odd agency issued handbook and gut instinct.

merlin436 haha yes. It is unfortunate that recruiting/hiring has been such a focus point in recent years, but the recruiting network is seemingly still provided with little to no resources to actually be of any assistance to applicants beyond saying “call the hiring center.” The Hiring Center is a different case all together though, that’s a staff that’s supposedly solely dedicated to the hiring process, although it seems a pretty regular occurrence where they don’t know the answer to certain questions, or just provide generic copy/paste responses that don’t contain any actual information. Probably the biggest inconsistency I’ve experienced is with answers surrounding polygraph scheduling. Some “officials” have said you absolutely cannot be scheduled until after your medical clears, others have said you can. Some have said the average wait is 8-12 weeks, other have said it’s upwards of 6 months or longer. In my case, I’ve been waiting over 7 months. All the recruiters I’ve talked to have said that seems abnormal and have tried reaching out on my behalf, but can’t get any kind of specific update. When you ask the Hiring Center, they say they don’t deal with the polygraph and don’t know anything about it and you need to reach out to CAD in OPR for info. Well then you try emailing/calling CAD and you can’t get even a single response. It’s literally as if nobody knows what’s going on, or how to find out. Meanwhile it seems like some of us have just been lost in the shuffle and are up the creek without a paddle...

Some of you had called it, My Poly for tomorrow has been cancelled due to the shutdown. I guess my examiner had more faith in the government than the most of us and thought it would've reopened by tomorrow. poor guy has a long career ahead of him if he thought it was going to reopen under a week

          Hello Everyone,

Quick questions: With a full year experience as NYC Correction Officer, are you qualified for GS 9 position?
if yes, do you have to provide documentations for prove of eligibility when applying or you bring them afterwards?

          Thank you all!

Good Question. I am a BOP Correctional Officer and I qualified for the GS9 spot simply because I am currently a GS7 officer. IDK about other DOC agencies though. Even though I'm sure you have the same work experience that I have. If I was you I would apply to both the GS5 and the GS9 spot. That away you'll be covered on both ends. B_N

this is what i put down in the corrections, I was given the GS9 for being Military Police

You qualify as a GS-09 if you can meet the standards below and sufficiently write up your qualifications to convince the folks in hiring that you do, in fact, meet the minimal qualifications.

            Qualifications

The qualification requirements listed below must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

You qualify for the GS-9 grade level (starting salary $50,598 up to $95,598 with potential overtime) if your supporting documentation shows you possess one of the following:

Experience: A minimum of 1 year of specialized full-time work experience that demonstrates the ability to make rapid, accurate judgments and decisions with respect to the application of the regulations, instructions, and procedures for importing and exporting merchandise to and from the United States, or enforcement and administration of laws relating to the right of persons to enter, reside in, or depart from the United States; OR

Education Substitution: Two full years of graduate level education (equivalent to 36 semester credits or 54 quarter credits) in a field of study related to law enforcement (e.g., criminology, criminal justice, law enforcement, courts and judicial systems, corrections and rehabilitation, justice studies, homeland security, forensic technology and forensic psychology) at an accredited college or university; OR

Will complete two full years of graduate-level education (equivalent to 36 semester or 54 quarter credits) within 9 months from the closing date of this announcement in a field of study related to law enforcement (e.g., criminal justice, homeland security, justice studies, law enforcement, courts and judicial systems, forensic technology, forensic psychology or corrections and rehabilitation) from an accredited college or university and will upload all official or unofficial transcripts before the closing date of this announcement; OR

Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of graduate level education completed in a field of study related to law enforcement (e.g., criminology, criminal justice, law enforcement, courts and judicial systems, corrections and rehabilitation, justice studies, homeland security, forensic technology and forensic psychology) at an accredited college or university AND specialized work experience. This will be calculated using your resume and official or unofficial transcripts submitted with your application.

So There is a good chance I could qualify as well. I have two years experience as juvenile correctional officer with the state of texas, 60 credits in criminal justice and 5 years experience with inport and exported goods.

Does it cancel out current process for gs7? I'm almost complete.

Unfortunately DOC is not classified as a sworn police officer position. Last time someone asked they was told no because as a correction officer you are classified as a peace officer.

It almost seems like the poly examiners just found out this week they’re not supposed to be working during the shutdown. For the first several weeks, people were still getting scheduled left and right, I believe a few people even took the poly during the shutdown. Now it looks like it’s all coming to a complete halt. Have you met with your Background Investigator yet? It’s not possible for your background to be completed until that happens, and they meet/speak with your references. As is the case with almost every part of the hiring process, there’s a lot of conflicting info about their about order of steps, etc. for the most part, they say your background investigation will not start until after you pass the poly. BI’s are expensive and they obviously wouldn’t want to waste time/money if somebody fails the poly anyways. Although I’ve been told by some recruiters that it can start before the poly in some cases so who really knows lol.

Poly is part of the background process. But the actually starts once you pass poly. Meeting with the investigator is the field portion. Once they submit your background it goes to opm. They go through and complete the background and give final adjudication.

That is good, but then you move into the adjudication wait -_-. It really depends on how lengthy your background is but i see the average being 2-3 months at least. I'm going into month 2 waiting for adjudication next week.
