  • Great posts from Hunt the Jackal and gixfeet---lets keep the discussion flowing!

Finally some good posts about pros and cons of the job!

Hunt the Jackal, you gave us good insight as to the job at a land port.

Can anyone else shed more light on the day-to-day at an airport and a water port? And be as descriptive as the Jackal??

Has anyone given up the idea of becoming a CPB just because the journeyman is a 12 not higher?

    Thanks a bunch.

    • Hello to all! I just got sent over to Tsu this morning. While speaking with the specialist over at MHC, he told me that everything looked good to go and that he cant see any further problems except the fact that he thinks that there are not many vacancies open in all other Florida. Anyone know anything about this. If you do, how long have you been waitng. Ive got a friend over in Jacksonville and he told me that they just brought in like 16 people in the last two weeks. Any responses would be appreciated. Thanks.

        As an example:

Say you work 25 years as a CBPO/any covered position and you buy back 4 years of military time. Say your top 3 years are 95K, 100K, and 105K. That's an average of 100K.

        20 years at 1.7% = 34K
        5 years at 1%.....= 5K
        4 years Mil. at 1%= 4K

Total retirement...43K, plus whatever you build your TSP to, plus social security.
In the case of this example, that 43K is what the person gets per year of retirement for as long as they live, correct? So if you have 20 years of retirement then it is worth $860K, or different if you choose to rearrange it so it supports your spouse as well. Let me know if I am wrong.

I've been waiting for about 65 days in TSU for all other Florida. All I can do is wait.

She said that for everyone who tested feb/08 or before should have received a call already. Also the lady was really friendly and open to answer all the questions I had for her. She also said that not to worry if you miss the first "phone call". They will keep calling you for a few days, and then send you a letter asking you if you are still interested in the job. She informed me that the wait could be a while longer, days, months, maybe a year:-(. All I know is that 10 people is a lot of people to get picked up before me. Let’s hope that the waiting game is not that long.

......I have been in TSU since 03/05/09 for S.F./OAK
Well I have been in TSU since 02/20/09 (61 day's) casey3. I was told that I'm number 3 in line for the call at SFO/Oakland, I'm not holding my breath because I'm really not sure if such a number in line really exist. That's what I was I told yesterday when I called on my 60 day follow-up mark! If there is such a number then that is comforting to know that I'm a hop skip and a jump away... but I'm really not sure if they are just blowing smoke up my rear to comfort me!!!

              • My wife was able to call someone in Training Scheduling Unit, and they said there is absolutely nothing in orlando for those who care. I just want to stay in Jacksonville only cause of my house.

                • People! Gather around and let me tell you something.

First, we already get a LEO Retirement, no if's and's or but's.

Second, we don't want to get "LEO" pay. LEO pay is only for GL-9 or below, and if we were to get that we would loose our COPRA and would get AUO (not going to explain those two again). If I'm at a port where I can Cap out, then I will make more money with COPRA then I would with AUO.

So again, LEO pay, or GL pay is not all it's cracked out to be, and it's only good for 9 or below. A Journeyman Border Patrol Agent and a Journeyman CBPO are on the same pay scale.

                  • I only posted the LEO pay scale because someone asked to see it.

                      Thanks for the info...

However, I'm noticing that the retirement numbers seem to be different...43k a year may not be enough.

Yeah it wasn't directed at you, my bad. It was a general thing.

Personally, I'd love to see the numbers crunched for all 20,000+ CBPOs. I'd be willing to bet that for the majority, we'd see people making nearly the same or a little more under AUO. Sure, those with the opportunity to cap out would take a hit...but that's what, maybe 30-35% of us at the most?

That's why you invest heavily and wisely in your TSP. Back in 05/06, I knew guys retiring who were making more in retirement than they were working...thanks to shroud TSP management.

I'm sure most of the NB and medium size airports are about the same. But talking to some Leg INS guys who made the jump to IEA, AUO is a messed up deal. The one guy has been there almost a year and still hasn't "qualified" for it. So for the OT he does work he just gets 1.5x OT. Your required to work your 10 hours per week routinely.

So I don't know, your probably right. But would we also loose our shift diffs, at least at the levels we have them? I know from my evening and Sunday diffs, that adds up to a lot too.

                                Yes.

Those are pretty much today numbers. 20 years down the road, the average CBPO hired today will probably be making considerably more than 100K per year. If during that time we get a journeyman bump to GS-12 or higher, expect to see more added to that as well.
