Dress nice and relax, it's pretty painless. Regarding credit, it could disqualify you if it is as bad as you say and you have defaulted on loans.

Poor Credit is a reflection on personality and will be held against you by the adjudicator. How much you owe and how many delinquencies reflect on character and responsibility, and it also gives them an idea as to how a person could be susceptible to taking bribes because of money problems.

If it is that bad you will most likely receive a NOPA and you will have to explain each and every one of your debts and how have you been paying them off, even before you decided to apply for CBP, explain in detail as to how you got to that point. Be very honest and hope that it'll be enough for them to find you suitable.
      Good Luck !

      • Most of it is due to the financial times, and my reasoning for employment as a CBP Officer is also in part to begin clearing that debt..

        Catch 22, I suppose.

          I completely understand,
but in my case they brought up an account with a 0 balance that showed up as "derogatory" on the report, I had to explain how I was late on a payment and that even though it was paid off it would still show up as "derogatory" on the report since I was late paying it that one time. Stuff like that stays on your report for some time. I only have one credit card and only owe about $2,000 to a bank... and I had to explain it all on my NOPA!...
It just shows how deep they dig to find candidates unsuitable!

Yep, that is indeed some chickensh**. You try to better yourselve and serve the country by applying for the job, and all they want to do is find reasons to keep you out. Tisk, tisk, tisk.

              • I'm new here and I had the same problem. I am unemployed and fell behind on my car loan. It wasn't repo'd and I made payment arrangements. I had to give them the documents showing that I am making the payments. I also had 2 other items on my credit report and had to dispute them and show proof that I had no knowledge of them. This was a NOPA from IA. Who knows what is gonna happen when it gets to the adjudicator. Waiting since 11/08 to hear something.

I am in the same exact position as you. Without a job you cannot pay the bills which results in debts that you were paying before that you can no longer pay. This being the case, credit report may be a measure of character but should not be the ultimate determinant. It is not the workers fault why a company shuts down, wants cheap labor or outsources America's jobs.

                        • Anyone here from PA get a T.O. Recently? I see that GMS632 got one in May of 2008 and was recently EOD'd. Anyone get a T.O. after that? Philly is my hometown and was considering that location as well... Thanks.

                          • Wow Yoda!

I guess I fully expect a NOPA after reading your problem. I am not late on any credit cards but I do have 15,000 in credit card debt. On the other hand I paid off my home worth 350,000 and my vehicles are also paid off. I hope that evens out their view. Perhaps that is why my BI has been pending for 5 months while others get by so fast. I am also older then most applicants, using my prior government law enforcement position time to get in under the age cut off.

How close are you from the 6 month period of your meeting with the investigator? if you're close to it let me know, cause you probably hit the "pile" zone, I'll get you the contact info for IA so that you can get a nudge on your case (ONLY FOR THOSE AT 6 MONTH POINT).

I take it you just joined the O.com and haven't read through the whole thread so I'll give you the skinny on my case...
Met my BI in Dec. 07, after 6 months of waiting for a word from them a fellow member gave me the contact to IA, Took me about a month to get a hold on my Adjudicator... Then 2 months after that to have her send out the NOPA... Sent in the Response Oct. 28, 08... Finally got a hold on the Supervising Adjudicator of my case last week...and he told me NOTHING had been done with my case since they received the response... My adjudicator just left it there in her desk and had done absolutely nothing with it... Told me to call at the end of Jan to make sure they had finished the report and sent out to the higher up's...
This in short has been my ordeal with my BI...
