  • Actually, several years back there was a serious effort within much of CBP to streamline training, create a unified basic academy with add-ons as needed, credit previous training and introduce reciprocity to reduce redundancy and duplication and create mini-academies as needed as lateral-friendly academies to more efficiently move prior FLEOs into CBP.

Everyone but the Border Patrol jumped on board and was willing to play ball. The BP refused to consider it and insisted that all BP hires attend their full academy.

Eventually BP obstructionism won out, CBP, OFO and the Office of Training and Development gave up trying and we're at where we're at today.

    • Question for anyone that qualified as a GS9 that is prior LEO.

I'm in the 17-9 process scheduled for my Poly on the 19th, However, twice I've applied for GS9 and twice I've been denied. The reason I was told was I don't have "a year of specialized importing and exporting merchandise or admissions of travelers."
My question is how did you get around that? I'm not military and I'm not a prior federal employee. I'm currently a Deputy with my local Sheriff's office.
I just don't understand how the GS9 process can be for prior Law Enforcement/Military because no LEO's that I know of have a year of that specific work history. At least not here in Indiana.

      I'm open for any suggestions.
      Thanks!

To my knowledge if you applied for the posting that were for prior LEO applicants you automatically get a GS 9. The only issue I could see is you didn't answer the qualifications questionnaire correctly and that is why it keeps getting kicked back.

You need to sell yourself in your resume and on the questionnaire. Like for the admissions of travelers you can say your processed people into jails after you arrested them which is in line with what they are asking. It is all up to you how you can qualify yourself for that GS 9 spot.

Would corrections count as a prior LEO position for purposes of GS-9 if we were considered a sworn peace officer?

The only reason I can see why you are getting kicked back is because you're not being specific. for example: crowd control during town functions, search and seizure: persons and vehicles for contraband, using wands/metal detectors during search etc.

    • Well, my poly result in the app says Fail. The examiner told me I failed but it was up to QC, guess they agreed with the examiner. According to my examiner my results are consistent with someone who has taken a course on how to fool a polygraph, and that I am part of an organized crime. Of course none of that is true. Good luck everyone.

I love that, Those chumps fail you because they can, but if your chart looks truthful, then they call iit subversion. There is a reason there is not one single shred of judicial notice for any type of polygraph.
Hope you find something better. I, too, was going the CBP route. But I finally decided its not worth the trouble at my age. I like where I live. (phx) Decent career in feds already. I don't need the hassle of some wanna-be 1811 telling me im a liar. hahah Best of luck to you !!!

I know its excruciating, but you're about a month behind me and im also 18-3 trust the process it'll come around when you least expect it. took them almost three weeks to schedule my PFT-1 after my medical and it was STILL blue when I went to do my PFT. Now its all green and im sitting at 33%.

I selected Jackman, Maine. I’m probably going to try to ask for Houlton, Maine when I get the call because there are actually places to rent nearby Houlton. Plus Houlton has a bigger housing market.

      • It’s been 3 months since I’ve met with my BI, and to be honest I’m getting discouraged. Not because it’s taking a while, but since my application is so old when and IF I get the call that my background cleared, I’m going to more than likely have to retake a lot of the steps in the hiring process.

@EnforceTheLawBro don't feel discouraged, i'am the only 16-2 i can bet is still in the process I also applied by october 2016 and this has really been a long process. My announcement was the ones that needed the PFT2 at the end of the process. I took and passed my PFT2 on March 2, 2018 and still have not received no call and EOD. They did ask me however like 2 weeks ago to re certify my medical status if anything has changed since my first medical which was in 2016 and I had a few updates to give and well I bet that is gonna add some time to be reviewed and stuff, I sometimes feel discouraged but Ive notice that you can't compare your process to someone else since everyones is different, best of luck man!

It was 3 months since I met with my BI too and then got called for the drug test. Was hoping for the call, but when I got the call it was to re-take my medical. I never took it with this process. I assumed they used my past medical from when I apllied years prior because all I got when it was time for the medical in this process what they wanted me to see an ear specialist. Now after everything is done they want me to go take the medical. Will the process ever end

@EnforceTheLawBro You need to reach out to your case handler or touch base with the proper personnel who handles each step of the process. That's what I did. You got to stay on them because a lot of times applications get pushed to the side when newer ones are steady coming. You should have been heard somethin by now. I'm 17-7 (April 2017) and my EOD date is March 28th.

It has been pretty non stop, but I made sure to not take a pre clear to extend the process out just a bit longer for my family's sake. The only hang up is the dreaded polygraph, Seen way too many people get DQ'd by it.

Yeah it does seem discouraging so many are DQ'ing on the Poly. Do they wait to start on your background pending a pass of your poly or do they do it all concurrently?

My impression is once the BI is worked that's when the Poly comes because they base most of the questions on it. So the only thing about it is to be 110% honest is the key apparently.

      • I see there was a VRA announcement for GS-9 recently and spoke to a recruiter about locations. They said that they are more inclined to work with the VRA applicants if they pass everything and decline the locations offered. Said they are more willing to work with the VRA applicants to get them closer to home, if possible.

Anyone on the job know anything about this? Also, I am assuming the Albany, NY location has very few people working in that area. Any chance of getting that location right out of the gate? Any idea how long a small location like that would take to get transferred back to?

Last I was in Albany,(2012ish) it held roughly 14 Officers.

Good luck getting there as a street hire. Good luck getting there period. It falls under the management of Champlain...so the probable best pathway into Albany probably starts at the terminus of I-87.

      • Woke up Tuesday to 6 emails from CBP-MED team.
They sent me 3 forms to complete.

Looks like I got 30 days to see an ophthalmologist, kinesiologist, psychiatrist and prepare a nice little package to mail.
They gave me an option to link all doc's to all 3 applications: 18-1, the VRA, and DH.

There are 328 distinct ports and hundreds of additional different facilities, crossings, and locations within OFO, across all 50 states and various territories, plus multiple foreign postings.

What the job is like is often highly dependent on location.

Ohare is a decent sized port and busy enough. Midway is not tiny, but trends downward on the smaller end.

Airports tend to lean more towards community service, administrative, regulatory work than more law enforcement oriented actions. If by "busy" you mean LE work, you might be disappointed. I've heard in the past though that Ohare is one exception to that general rule...at least as far as airports go.
