    • FYI, a new announcement is out now, but only for select cities. A nationwide announcement will be out this fall, before the end of the year. Good luck.

            • For anyone interested I have found a very informative forum with many particpants who are applicants or CBPO's. Here is the link: http://forums.delphiforums.com/customsinspect/

This forum may be better able to answer any questions.

The only time that counts for retirement in the federal system is federal time.
But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new guards for their future security.

For the intelectually challenged: If the government screws the people enough, it is the right and responsibility of the people to revolt and form a new government.

                  • Does anyone know if partial color blindness will get you rejected for CBP officer?

                    • You will need to pass the colour blindness test in order to get passed.

A good objective of leadership is to help those who are doing poorly to do well, and to help those

                        • In which way was the geo pref categorized in the last nationwide announcement? Were you able to choose specific cities, specific states or specific regions? Thanks

                          Comment

                          • Some of the cities were listed where you could choose, but mostly states or regions ( Southwest Border of california, Florida etc..)
This time around they are offering several post states, but you have to take all tests and interviews in those states. So say someone in Cincinnati, Oh applies for a vacancy in Alaska, he/she has to fly to Alaska for testing and interviews. Hopefully they will change that in the next vacancy announcement.

                            • Nolapig,
There will be another general announcement soon. With the new FY coming up and retention issues they have to keep hiring. Wait for the general announcement and put in for NOLA if you want to stay there. Do consider this however - GS7 pay in NOLA is a lot less than GS7 pay in Houston....

Near NOLA we have people in Morgan City, NOLA, BR, Biloxi/Gulfport, Lake Charles, Houston (Airport and Seaport).

                              • Hey everyone,
I've been reading some of the posts and thought I should respond. Threads this long often are hard to follow, so I'll try to address some of the questions that I've noticed over and over again. This is in reference to CBP OFFICER positions ONLY.

                                1. FLETC - CBPI course - Fletc is a live in academy that is approximately 10-12 weeks long depending on what time of the year you go. It is located in Brunswick, Georgia, about halfway between Jacksonville, FL and Savannah, GA. All room and board is taken care of by the Govt. You get three hots a day, your own room with maid service (they make your bed and change the towels/linens and clean the head), and access to all the regular training facilities on the "base". Fletc used to be a Navy Blimp base in WW2, but now is all Fed LE. You can drive your car to FLETC, but once there there are limitations on what you can do with your car on post. Uniforms, duty belts and blue guns are provided for you. You can leave the post after school hours and on weekends at your leisure. Bring your beach wear if it's summer, St Simons island and Jekyl island are close by.

                                2. CBP retirement - Our retirement is FERS, 1% per year. We also get the TSP and Social Security as part of our retirement. Google TSP, FERS and Social Security for more information on that.

                                3. Age limit - There is currently NO AGE LIMIT FOR CBP OFFICERS.

                                4. Transfers - Can it happen? Yes it can. Is it guarenteed? No. My advice - hold out for the location you want, unless you just want to get on the job.

CBP offers a LOT of international travel opportunities. There are preclearance jobs in Canada, Ireland and other locations overseas. CSI has ports all over the world on every continent. IAP has opportunities in London, England, and of course there are missions in Iraq and Jordan. Afghanistan may be coming online as well.

Some ports like Houston and Miami have Special Response Teams now, many of the nay sayers said that'd never happen with CBP as well, but they're here now. We are officers performing an inspection function, and this function is critical to the Homeland Security mission and vital to the protection of our nation. It bears a lot of responsibility and little reward save the money. That's one thing that is consistant with LE work though, so none of us should be surprised about that.

I recently got back from the Iraq mission, and it was quite an experiance, dangerous, educational and fun all in one.

It's like anything else, it's what you make of it. It's probably the easiest job I've ever had. I worked for NOPD for three + years and another 1.5 years for a sheriffs office out west, and this is by far easier and pays way more money with a lot of off time for my family. It's not for everyone, however 3 years on the streets of a city like New Orleans and you quickly access what's valueable to you and your family. For me the money and the time off for my family and hobbies weighed more than the excitement of chasing the same thug through the projects on a daily basis and getting shot at as well.

It's a great starting place for your career.
