Hey Solid Snake, did you ever go get your vision re-tested?
I got the letter in the mail yesterday regarding me not being medically cleared due to my vision and depth perception. I am going to go to my eye doctor next week.

    • Just took my VBT. I'll have to agree with everyone else's sentiments that it truly is a different kind of animal, and threw me a curveball. I still feel that I did solid enough to pass. In anycase, I wasn't able to ask the CBPO Sup that was administering the VBT. He was a nice guy though. Anyways, here's to the home stretch! Good luck to everyone else and their applications!
      "Officer, you are kinda hot."

      "And you are kinda intoxicated."

            • Thanks for the info Merlin. That was a very informative response and makes me feel a lot better. I definately owe you a beer for all of your help. Now I just need to actually get hired.

'Overstaffed' ports? Yeah, right. Maybe if hours were reduced somehow, but there's not many places where that's likely to happen. Might it affect a handful of officers here or there...possibly. I doubt you'd see anyone let go though, the union would fight that tooth and nail. Relocated...maybe.

If something was to happen, you'd first see hiring stopped. Since next year's budget is pretty much in place, you'd likely wouldn't see that happen before 2010. Next, before a reduction in force you'd see early retirement offered across the service. I don't believe this agency or any parent agency has ever had a need to do a RIF.

One big thing to remember...CBP/OFO is one of a few government agencies that actually brings in more cash for Uncle Sugar than he pays out to run the show. Hundreds of millions of dollars are brought in through the ports in customs, commercial, and immigration fees each day. We're one of the biggest cash cows going for the 'G'. I doubt that Uncle Sugar has any plans to cut into OFO in any meaningful way.

Hey, no I haven't received any mails yet. I am starting to worry because its almost 1 month since my medical exam. Does your letter say that you have to wait 3 months?

                • Uniforms

                  Merlin.....or anyone else who knows,

Just curious....what are the different CBP uniforms like? It's been a long time since I've crossed the boarder and I can't find a good full body shot of an officer online.

Are the border crossings' uniforms more fatigue style with tapered pantlegs and boots or are they more state police type formal? Are you allowed to, or do any CBPOs wear the added suspender type supports for their duty belts? It just seems like pulling a double with the extra weight on your hips would really get to you after awhile.

I have been told that the airport dress is a little bit more formal than the land border crossings, and I have no idea about marine ports or entry.

I think CTRT pretty much covered it.

Class 4 BDU's- cargo. land border, sea ports.
Class 3 (less dressy) police type-passenger, land border, sea ports.
Class 2(more dressy) police type- passenger, airport
Class 1 (formal) police type- ceremonial, etc.

In that sense, gs levels do not set hiring speeds?
Ok, this is exactly what MHC told me as well. But what i want to understand is this:

By selecting ONLY GS-7 and not GS-5 does that mean you will have to wait longer to get a T.O. OR to get selected at the local port OR both?

My guess...you'll likely wait longer for a TO, and you'll likely wait longer for qualifications to clear.

Once you pass those there shouldn't be a further hangup. Of course, you may be at the bottom of a pile of GS-05 applicants by then...if they cleared any sooner than you.

I think you only have to wait three months if you've had eye corrective surgery.

                              • It's usually 4-6 weeks before the Hiring Center hears back from Medical Review on your status. I wouldn't be worrying so much. If you had lasik surgery you have to wait 3 months from your surgery date and have the doctor fill out some forms clearing you.
