Good deal, I'm heading to SFO to take it on Thursday. Did you stay the night somewhere or just drive from Sacramento area? (I'm in a Sacramento suburb)

I live in West Sac. took me about 1hr 20min to get there then I drove back. No need to stay over night if you live that close, at least I think. I requested to take it in Oakland so I wouldn't have to deal with the traffic SFO as I was originally scheduled. Don't forget to dress to impress. A SUIT was my choice of preferance and bring 4 dollars to pay for the toll on the way back at the Benicia Bridge. Good Luck Man!

I live on the other side (I'm about 20 minutes south of Auburn), so it takes me more time usually. Luckily my friend lives in Alameda and is letting me sleep on his futon the night before, but I still have to wake up at the buttcrack of dawn to get ready, since I have to take the bridge over to get to SFO. The suit's all ready to go, so I'm just waitin' around.

An oh yea, I've made that mistake before. Imagine how much of a loser I feel like when I don't have the 4 bucks to pay for the Martinez bridge crossing. Ugh.

Ports. Got it. Thanks. ND sounds like a good place to start. Just had a look at the map of all the ports in the state. Concerning the out of the way ports, generally do officers live in the small communities or commute from Grand Forks, Minot, Etc..

There are a few people in Pembina who commute from GF.(75 or more miles...1 way.) I imagine that Minot has a few that commute from there as well. Winter will make a commute like that difficult, to say the least.

For the most part, most officers stay in the smaller towns closer to work. Get used to the idea of living in a town of 1 to 2K...or smaller. Expect to travel 70-150 miles to get to the nearest Target, Old Navy or Lowes.

Just a heads up for all you guys/gals who assume they have been granted "interim" clearance. Im the last guy to be the grim reaper, but the whole "interim" is crap if you were assume to think your good to go. I was at FLETC last year and damn near half my class got pullled out at one point or another to answer up and sign forms, etc. for BI stuff. Trust me, I know for a ball sack kicking fact that it mean nothing. Yes, you do go to fletc, no doubt, but the fact that your fingerprints dont show you to be a murderer doesnt mean theyre not gonna F with you.Theres no science to it whatsoever. Granted I would rather have an interim and start getting paid asap, but clearing BI in "CASS" doesnt mean you are out of the woods yet. Just make sure to have your info, paperwork, and story of your life in order, because you can find yourself in the 15th week of the academy sweating your job. (Trust Me...)

You have to have at least an interim clearance to get to the academy. As far as the rest of you post, yep pretty much if you have an interim the investigators can still dig things up that you have been hoping won't be found. The answer to that is to be as honest and up front as possible on the paperwork.

Yeah, i agree. I started rambling but my point was that interim doesnt equal completed and cleared.

i have been here at fletc for 5 weeks now and my class was told that less then half the class backgrounds are done. we have 47 and nobody yet has been pulled out of class

Kiddie any tips or suggestions? I leave Dec 8th. I have been running. Anything else I could do to prepare?

You guys need to keep in mind that as GS-7 you will have to wait for a GS-7 spot to open at your port. I'd rather take GS-5 as quickly as possible...besides, by the time you get back from the academy, you might only have 6 more months to go to get 7...

Sorry, I've been gone a week so this is delayed...

In theory it's a good idea...especially for new grads. But there are some people who, after taking a GS-7, will already be taking pay-cuts and still have to support their families, to take a GS-5 at 10,000 less per year (and yes I know you will work overtime to make up for some of it, but for the same reason I would like to limit my overtime as much as possible). I'm not attacking you, it just doesn't make any sense to me why someone who is better qualified at a GS-7 would have to wait longer for a position than someone with less experience at a GS-5... But, maybe its just me....

Myself, I can wait... It seems like everyone is doing a lot of that anyway

I don't think it'd be a probably. It'd be a good sign to them. Business casual is usually ok as well.

My BI visited me at work, so fortunately, I was already dressed in semi-formal attire. Considering that you need a positive recommendation from the BI, I would suggest wearing at least something semi-formal.

My BI is a woman and met with six of my references before I met with her. Now I have guy calling my house wanting to meet with my roommate. Thought maybe the case got transfered to him, but now another one of my references is supposed to me with the woman tomorrow. Is it normal to have two people on one case?

Are you saying that if there are two people have been sent to tsu at the same time, one has been qualified at gs-5, the other at gs-7, and only gs-5 is available at the port at the time, the gs-5 will get hired first??

If so, can the gs-7 person ask for the gs-5?

I heard that if they don't have a gs-7 available, then they will automatically offer the gs-5, instaed of making that person wait?
