Supervisory Customs Officer. Sounds like you work for CBP as non-uniformed. Therefore, just talk to the Supervisor of the Branch you work.

If Civilian clothed employee with CBP (Entry or Import Specialist), there would be your immediate Supervisor, and then your Branch Chief, and then the Area Port Director.

If Uniformed with CBP, there would be your Supervisory Customs Officer (SCO), and then your Chief, and then the Area Port Director.

When I worked Civilian Clothed CBP my Supervisor was the Area Port Director because I worked directly with him/her.

Now, my being a Uniformed CBP (Technician), I showed my SCO the IA website saying if you have any questions, email them. Showed him, he agreed I wasn't stepping out of the chain-of-command, and went and emailed IA. They responded within 48 hours.

Previous posts indicate that the actual VBT itself is 30 minutes.

        • Is it normal for BIs to have a strict deadline of when they are due? (i.e one week, two weeks, etc) Or is it just however long it takes?

          • I'm not sure that a current employee would qualify for an interim clearance. I'm not sure why a current employeee would want to contact IA. I'm not seeing how contacting IA about a job application is going outside the chain of command.

            In short, I'm confused. Why?

            • Yeah I agree with Merlin....I don't need to follow chain of command when it comes to personal business (which this is)...we had a meeting last week and they said the only time we need to follow chain of command is when there are issues with policy or department problems...other then that we can go to whom ever...

Merlin...I'm contacting IA because I was told by training and development I would not need to complete another background... being that I just completed one in Feb 08....but if they need to do follow ups then I'd like to be admitted as interim in the meantime

You already have a current background.

It's my understanding the interim clearances are only offered to people who've led bland, uneventful lives where it's most likely there's little chance of them having done anything a BI might find objectionable. Since you already have a clearance, there's good chance you might have done something objectionable.

My guess is that there's only two options for you...running with your original clearance, or a whole new BI. Then again, I may be wrong.

My current GEO is East Texas. I would like to keep this GEO but since it is no longer listed as "Many Vacancies/Critical Need" I am guessing I will have to wait longer for a position if I stick with it. If I had to switch locations I would probably go with Florida since I'm already there...

Anyone with experience regarding this have any idea if I'm still likely to get East Texas or do you think I should just switch GEO?

                    Thanks.

You’re reading too much into “critical needs”.

“Critical needs” is as much if not more about meeting application expectations at the hiring center than filling actual “boots on the ground”.

Say statewide ND has 350 officers and currently is running 13% behind full up. That leaves them looking to fill 46 or so actual jobs. Say the hiring center wants 10 applicants for every position to be filled…they’re looking for roughly 460 applications. If they only have 200 applications in the running today, guess what?…they’re in “critical need”. Now if JFK needs to fill 90 jobs, but they have 1200 applications in the works…they’re not critical need.

As far as you getting east Texas…I’ll say that with a score of 98 you’ve pretty much have assured yourself a TO. The only thing I see that might hold you back is if you only applied as a 7. If it happens that all the available 7’s get handed out before they get to you, then you’ll be skipped if you didn’t also apply for a 5. Other than that all you really need to do is wait, IMO.

Unless you really want Florida...with a score of 98 you'd get picked up there too.

                        Thanks Merlin,

Yep, I only picked 7, but then I really couldn't afford to take gs-5. Anyway, I think I'll just stick it out with East Tx. That's really where I want to be anyway. But do you really think only picking gs7 will hurt my chances or is it just increasing my overall wait time? I have a funny feeling I'll be waiting here with everyone for a while anyway. lol...

I'm glad you explained the distinction above, I guess I really thought "critical needs" meant that they were looking to fill the position asap...

                        Thanks again.

It may...impossible to tell you for sure. If I was guessing I'd say most likely it would only set you back until more 7's were funded. That could be awhile though.

It may...but even in that case it really likely only means a person would be seeing a TO quicker. The BI, drug test, VBT and all the rest would likely plod along just the same as for anyone else.

There is always a deadline. Don't get too excited, the deadline could be "no later than the end of the month" or it could be "no longer than six weeks".
