  • I've never been good with the salary calculation part of this.

Some of us will start GS5. I not quite sure how one goes up steps. How long does it take from GS5 to GS10 or 11.

How long from one step to the other.

    • Took my medical and PFT1 today. Everything went fine, although my eyesight was not the greatest in the world...we'll see what they say about that. Judging by how everything totaled at the end of the fitness test I ought to score 131, so I don't see that being an issue. \o/

They sent you the EQUIP after taking the VBT and Medical. Havent seen that before

It is their option and your choice. If you accept a lower level/step it's considered a voluntary reduction. With that said, when I was hired I had been under the GL pay schedule and they pay matched under the GS schedule with several bumps up the step increase. Several people I was hired with had previous higher pay grades and they max'd them out on the step increases attempting to match as close as they could.

Merlin just posted this information within the last week or so. If you look back a few pages he covered the time frame for the grade increases as well as the step increases.

If you are a current DHS employee they are more likely to work with you.

Pay matching and pay retention isn't as clear as it used to be under FCIP hiring. It pretty much was a given under FCIP. These days it's far more difficult to predict or presume.

                          What confuses you?

                          If you start as a GS-05 you'll bump up to GS -O7 in 52 weeks from from your EOD date. 52 weeks from that...a GS-09. 52 weeks...GS -11. 52 weeks. ..GS-12.

                          52 weeks from the GS -12 bump you'll kick up to a GS-12/02. 52 weeks...GS -12/03. 52 weeks. ..GS -12/04.

Steps 4,5,6 take 2 years between increases.
                          Steps 7,8,9 take 3 years.

                          Step 10 tops the scale.

That's pretty much it. Outside of a more or less epic screwup that sees a person denied an upgrade and that almost never happens.

As a practical matter there's also overtime, differentials and annual (hopefully) federal pay raises. Ultimately, a person ought to make something above base pay. How much more is highly dependent on the choices of person and the circumstances surrounding his port.
