Well, honestly I am very interested in doing immigration. It would probably help if I provide a background. For the last year I have been practicing as an Immigration Attorney and am looking to switch to the goverment side. I've narrowed the jobs I am interested in to the following:

    1. CBPO -CBP
    2. Asylum Officer -USCIS
    3. Adjudication Officer -USCIS
    4. Detention and Removal Officer - ICE

I would just hope that if I was sent to a land border I would be able to practice more on the immigration side of things...any thoughts?
Adjudication officer no longer exists. The position has been changed to Immigration Services Officer. It only goes to GS-9 now compared to GS-12 as before.

    Thanks!
What do you consider a while? The announcement closed in early Aug.

      No.

I wouldn't expect anything to open up on the hiring front until at least '09. Probably more like March or April.

A good sized landborder crossing like Highgate or Derby Line will give you more immigration experience than anywhere in TN, IMO.

As a nug, you're pretty much stuck going anywhere and doing some of everything, but once you've some time in you can manipulate your schedule to a degree and probably secure youself mostly immigration work. I doubt anywhere will let you exclusively practice on the immigration side, but most ports tend to put people in the side of the house they're best at and most comfortable with.

Of course, if you really want immigration experience, look to JFK, Newark, Dulles, LAX, etc. On the landborder, look to Buffalo, Detroit,, San Ysidro, etc.

They are "Training Holidays" the day after Thanksgiving and the day before and after Christmas. Which means you are supposed to stay in your room and study. Or you can take a vacation day and do what you want.

I don't know where you got that from. It is either a work day or a holiday. The President will decide which in mid December.

Ok.. Its either a holiday, if you are in training status it should be holiday off (if you do work you should get holiday premium pay) or its a workday and you go to class.

Here's a press release and link to a prior Executive Order regarding the same situation.

My husband is at FLETC for 1811 training and they are off for November 27 & 28 and December 25 & 26; I assume that is for all of FLETC.

Thanks for the info I was unaware that CBP even had Spanish training anywhere other than GA.

i really hope someone will follow up on this. i just can't believe that if i didn't try to follow up w/ my investigator, i would be sitting around forever!
So may I ask, did you hear anything for the past weeks? I am also standing at the Lasik recovery time for 60 more days and my BI still not clear.

Thanks for the insight Merlin. I will just keep my geo pref and take my chances with whichever location they will give me. Besides, worst case scenario I will only have to wait two years and then try to transfer to Burlington or wherever.... Anyway, its more important to me to get the job anyway.

                              Thanks again!

Does anyone know when the first promotion starts? I mean does your first year on the job start when you EOD, when you enter / graduate FLETC, or when it's your first day at the port after graduating FLETC.
