I tested on August 23 2008 in Houston, received my results September 9th = Rating 98. So I'm hoping to get a T.O. pretty quickly...

I tested for VT, I doubt that you would be able to choose BTV (Burlington Intl Airport) as your location. There are no actual commercial international flights, only private flights. As far as I know there is like one, maybe two officers that work there. Like others said most likely High Gate (89) or Derby Line (91). Let me know if you hear anything...good luck.

There are Border Patrol Agents within CBP. They usually patrol the border. CBPO's work the ports of entry at the airports, seaports and landborder.

Landborder: cars, trains, buses, commercial trucks. Lots more traffic. lots of outdoor work. Lots of local traffic crossing back and forth. Usually more OT, mostly double shifts.

Seaport: ships and boats. Can be cargo or passenger work. Usually more scheduled/ predictable than a landborder crossing. virtually no local traffic. Lots of outdoor work. usually less OT.

Airport: Highly predictable traffic. Mostly passenger orientated. Virtually no local traffic. May have good OT, usually in less than 8 hours shifts. Little outdoor work.

Edit: Your chances of getting into Burlington as a new hire are very slim. Burlington airport is rather small and almost always filled by CBPO's currently in VT. As was said you most likely are looking at ending up at Derby line, or Highgate.
I should have thought about this before. I am thinking of changing my GEO preference to Tennessee. I wonder what exactly they mean by "Few Vacancies" Anyone have any idea?

      Thanks,

        Alright,
with a test score of 98 you shouldn't have a problem getting a TO at any port you choose from, be it "critical needs" or "few vacancies". They select people by scores, and of course budget... you need to make your mind up pretty soon about your GEO pref. because after you get your TO, you will only be allowed to change your GEO on an open hiring period (only to those ports indicated at the time) and before you EOD, if not you will have to spend 2 years on your port and then wait for a "miracle" to get a transfer...

        Good luck bud...

TN is most likely listed as 'few vacancies' because there's likely less than 100 CBPO's in the entire state. Mephis has a Fed-Ex hub, and has roughly 80ish CBPO's and the other 3-5 ports are tiny, insignificant operations with somewhere between 2 and <10 officers.

What's your thing with airports? You feel like doing mostly immigration, or are looking to live in a city?

            I wouldn't say that.

Look at a state like Kansas, South Dakota, Rhode Island, or New Hampshire. You're looking at PoE's with 15 or less CBPO's assigned to them. They may only need 1 or two new people a year statewide. Or none. You could sit on a 98 for years waiting there if you had 3-4 people test in front of you with military service points and scores in the low 100's.

              • Hello All,
New to this thread. I tested in July 08 and received a score of 85 a couple of weeks later. I check CASS and go to the post office everyday. I am getting ready to deploy for a couple of months and I am afraid that I might receive a TO while I am gone. Is there any info that I may need to gather before I leave so that I may be prepared and expedite the packet?

                Thank you all for posting.

                • Ok, I have an interesting question. I'm a member of netflix, is there any way I could have my netflix movies delivered to me at FLETC and then ship them back.

                    Merlin,

Well, honestly I am very interested in doing immigration. It would probably help if I provide a background. For the last year I have been practicing as an Immigration Attorney and am looking to switch to the goverment side. I've narrowed the jobs I am interested in to the following:

                    1. CBPO -CBP
                    2. Asylum Officer -USCIS
                    3. Adjudication Officer -USCIS
                    4. Detention and Removal Officer - ICE

I would just hope that if I was sent to a land border I would be able to practice more on the immigration side of things...any thoughts?

Also what is the current annual overtime earning potential at miami airport? for any of you current CBPO's stations there

When I left before I came to FLETC, Miami Int Airport let everyone basically "max out" on OT, meaning $35k a year on top of your base. Basically if you want it, you got it... but youve got FLETC to complete first, then OJT, Spanish Training in Charleston SC (if needed), and some other courses when you get back to your POE. So dont expect OT anytime soon.

                      • FLETC holidays... Im sure most who are getting ready to attend want to know about holidays... well, here it goes... All federally recognized holidays you will have off. This thanksgiving, you will have off that day... and that friday, is declared a "non-training day"...meaning; if you leave campus you have to use annual time approved by your POE, if you choose to stay on campus, its basically a "free" day off.
Now this type of "non training" day, is only available to the holidays that are within one day of a weekend (such as thankgiving).

Another note Id like to stress to those about to attend... PREPARE. it is very easy to get hurt here... weve got 2 going home this week, one has a broken clavical, the other messed up their ankle. Stretch, run, do whatever you have to do to prepare for harder physical activity. Going to the Gym 3 days a week wont cut it, they check flexibility, how quickly you can move etc. Just try to prepare as much as possible. And if you are hurt when you get here TELL THE TRAINERS! they are nice, and very helpful. Missing 3 days and possibly being recycled because of medical is better then losing your job all together.

Christmas this year is on a Thursday, does that mean that the 26th will be a "non training day"??

They will decide that somewhere around December 20th.
