What is the Structured Interview (SI)?
The structured interview (SI) is a new assessment that will be given to applicants who apply for entry-level CBPO positions after October 2010. The interview will be given face-to-face, meaning that you will be interviewed in person; however, it will be videotaped for documentation purposes. You will be interviewed by 1-2 interviewer(s) who will ask you questions about your past experience handling certain situations and will probe for additional information. After you are dismissed from the room, two trained interviewers will rate you on several competencies. (Note that at some smaller testing locations, you may only be interviewed in person by one interviewer; however, a offsite second interviewer will participate in the rating process.) You must pass the SI in order to continue in the hiring process.
The SI is experience-based in nature, which means that you will be asked to describe past experiences related to different competencies that are critical to success as a CBP Officer (i.e., Teamwork, Flexibility, Cross-Cultural Communication, and Integrity). In addition, you will also be rated on the Oral Communication skills that you display during the interview. Shown below is an example experience-based interview question from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s website:
Describe a situation in which you dealt with individuals who were difficult, hostile, or distressed. Who was involved? What specific actions did you take? What was the result

Have you heard anything new Drifting? I have a question for the "Think Tanks". My brother has been locked up since 2010 and won't get out till 2015. He is in for a felony, not anything drug related or violence. I currently live with my parents to save money, and he is my brother so he lives here also ( Well did). I am currently a FLEO and I know he cannot be around firearms, or ammunition. You think they will find me unsuitable because he technically still resides here, or should I move out to be safe? I will be gone by the time he gets out anyway.
