      • One Step Forward...Two Backwards!

Well the wife came through and got all of the appointments scheduled for the various places I needed to go to address the medical issues, bless her heart. It was a huge effort and some luck was involved (appointment cancellations and calling at the right time!). They were all scheduled in time for me to meet the deadline MHC Med gave me...no extension request required. The final one got scheduled two days before I have to have everything postmarked. Life is good....or so I thought!

I went to the audiologist this morning and they confirmed that while I had a hearing loss in some of the upper frequency ranges, it was very slight. Uhhh, yep! Had it since I left the military 13 years ago. I had the same loss when I went through 4 physicals for BP and now 2 for CBP. That just confirms what I suspected, the last clinic CHS scheduled me with not only screwed up my vision screening, but the audiogram too (the only two things they had to do!).

Thinking I was on a roll, when I got home from work tonight I checked my schedule for the remaining appointments with the two different orthopedists. CRAP! I had one of the appointments yesterday and missed it! YIKES! It was too late to call today to try to reschedule it. I have so many dates I have to remember for appointments/scheduling during this month and next (training, court, special assignments), it fell through the cracks.

Everybody keep your fingers crossed for me that I can get another. Neither exam is for anything I'm worried about, especially with the doctor I missed my appointment with. That appointment was in regards to having broken my right foot 5 years ago. It was done in the line of duty while making an arrest. Since it was a workman's comp case, who did they send me to for treatment and final release back to full duty? The same doctor! He'd look mighty foolish to now say there was problem with it. I just have to get in to see him!!

Congrats to everyone that's received the call lately. Hopefully many more will soon follow!

        • No problem, you're all welcome. I'm sure more will come as i think about it. My academy is Jan 26-May 31. Most of that time after classes/weekends will be spent getting my house ready for sale and the move to San Diego. I may be able to play tour guide some times though. We really do have a nice place.

Oh, and on behalf of Glynn County, we apologize for the stench.

          • Places to stay in San Diego if a Military reservist or have access to the bases

There are a couple of bases you can try and stay at if you are a reservist or dependent of a Military member, at lodging or billeting. Navsta SD (32nd st.) isn't that far from SYS and I think it is fairly cheap. It might be a little spartan in terms of comfort but it is a option for those that can do it. And the San Diego Trolley has multiple stations around 32nd st and runs straight to the border ever 15 mins or so...

The appointments I had to make are for specialists. I already went to the physical that MHC scheduled. My appointments are on my dime in order to address some "issues" they were concerned about, so that I'm not disqualified.

How bad are we talking? Is it constant nasty funk or just occasional? Yikes, I need my fresh air.

They have Five Guys hamburgers down here in SD as well, at least you can look forward to your burger fixes... however; you'll soon learn that In-n-Out is better

No, it's pretty much constant funk. We have several plants in the area. A chemical-and-i'm-not-sure-what-else plant that is quite prolific in its "Oh, no it's safe" smell. I tell you, anything that smells like that isn't "Safe". There's also a pulp mill, that makes paper and whatnot. That one brings its own tasty goodness. Then there's one on the water that I don't know what it does except pollute our beautiful marshes. Oh, that one is "safe" also. Did I mention the higher than adverage asthma/bronchiolitis/cancer rate here?

In truth, you'll get used to it pretty quickly. When I go out of town for some time and come back, I tend to notice it. But that goes away within a day.

Oh, I know all about In-and-out. I lived in SD for 9 years. 5 in the Corps at Pendleton, and 4 in Imperial Beach afterwards, until we moved to Brunswick (my original home, but SD is my new home). Honestly, I can't decide who is better...5 Guys or I/O. Unfortunately, I'm going to lean toward 5G. Tough call though.

                      • Merlin/anyone else, I've read and noticed many people come from BP or TSA to customs, but is there any other agency that CBPOs tend to transfer TO?

                        DEA? FBI?

being a socal native, I grew up on In n Out.. didn't have 5 guys until a trip to DC a few years back, then suddenly they started opening them up out here a year or two ago.. I'd still lean towards I/O, but it is tough to beat the ability to get jalapeno's on my burger.

BP, ICE...the fact is that you'll likely find former CBPOs/CIs/IIs in just about every federal agency...if you look hard enough.

BP was/is a steady option because BP has hired thousands and thousands over the course of the last several years. ICE /was/is a steady option because in the case of HSI, there's ready-made experience with immigration and customs law. As far as DRO/ERO goes, Former IIs were IOBTC graduates...which meant that they could bypass the ICE-D academy.

                              • Uniforms

                                another question.

What am I going to be wearing while at pre-academy? Will it be provided for me, or will I have to buy it? Should I invest in a pair of Bates for myself, or, again, will they provide?

I'm flying across country and am curious about what to pack for the job. I can order my boots (partial to Bates from my military days) online for cheaper.

As far as the uniform, will I be allowed to blouse my trousers, vice tucking them into my boots (nasty army/airforce style) or letting them hang down over the boot? I REALLY would like to blouse them with the metal springs; it gives a nice professional look.
