        • Coming up on 1 year in TSU and just got the FedEx to redo E-QIP. Will they re-do the whole shebang? Investigator interviews and all? At least I know they haven't forgotten about me.

          • For those of you wondering about the poly's and the man power to handle the mass amount of BIs. This article came out in the Black Water weekly email. It discusses the increase in FBI task force activity to identify corrupt LEOs in border enforcement roles. It also discusses the inter agency co-operation between FBI, ICE, CBP, TSA, OIG, OIA.

            • Hey guys,

Been awhile since I been on. Now its word/or rumor on implementing a polygraph on new hires? What's the reason and what are they looking (I already know to catch you in a lie) for since they already completed a BI on applicants in TSU?

You're also talking about expenses for the polygrapher that is already factored into their job and won't change if they introduce it for all new hires (supplies, machine maintenance, training). CBP is spending that money for them already, which brings me back to my point that it would cost them not to use them.

Polygraphs are not, and will not be used for periodical exams, that's already been settled by the union. As for their usefulness I personally think they suck, so don't confuse my argument for their future use as my backing. The number 40 I provided was only a low, rough estimate that was provided back in May of 2009. It's quite possible they have doubled or tripled their staff since then.
You did not read my earlier post that they want to mandate polys for all who have law enforcement power at the border including import and entry specialist. This would not be something the union can negotiate out of, this is an actual bill S3243 Mark Pryor of AR. Check it out on thomas.loc.gov

This is where the money comes in, and why I said to by polygraph stock. The more tests the more supplies they use and the more expensive it gets.

Also learn how to run a polygraph, it will get you employed quicker than waiting for an officer job!!
Most of the examiners I have spoken to are retired from this agency or that one and now run polygraphs for CBP.

                • Polys.

OK, do we have any confirmation on it besides one guy talking to one HR guy.

This sucks. I failed a poly for drugs and alcohol and I have never done any drug and I have been drunk maybe 5 times in my life. Polys are notoriously unfair and a step or two above voodoo.

If they use it just as one of many tools, that's fine. But the agency I failed my poly with used it as a go/no-go event. No excuse, no retries. You're done forever. Like someone said, if they used it and balanced it with your legal history and background check, that would be OK. Would love for the BI to ask my friends and bosses about me drinking and having them laugh in his face.

I hope this doesn't pass. Polys keep a LOT of good people and only a few bad people out.

                  • Quick research shows that CBP has always done polys, but only for a select random few. Something like 10% in 2008 and 15% in 2009. So maybe extrapolate they are doing 15 to 25% now.

This is the same agency that can't pay people overtime so saying that they will poly 100% of applicants is a little hard to believe.

The key word here is "want" since this is only a bill and nothing more. They mean nothing until their passed. I'm talking from actual policy and straight from the top, and if they have the man power already in place it won't cost much of anything to incorporate it into the hiring process.

Not only does it have to pass but it has to be funded after it passes. Exit control has been mandated in the INA since at least 1997 but was never funded. Max HR was passed but again never funded. Upgrades March or April of this year but still not funded. Poly's have a long way to go before they become standard across the board. I would be very surprised to see it come to reality before there is a big change in where the money comes from.

                          • I'm indifferent to the poly. The NYPD and the Metropolitan Police Department are some of the finest law enforcement agencies in the nation. They do not polygraph their applicants. Granted, they have been in the headlines various times for ethical and integrity issues with it's officers, but most of them are good people. Even agencies that do poly still have their issues with the officers/agents. While I understand the purpose of the polygraph, i do wonder whether it should hold such as much weight as it does. Back in the day, polygraphs were not even used across the country most of the time for law enforcement, and law enforcement still produced excellent officers/agents. It far outweighed the negative officers/agents. Just my two cents.

I honestly do not think we will get TO's before the eligibility runs out in December. I think they will just tell us to reapply in 2-3 years when another announcement opens. Waited 15 months since test, what a shame...

I can't speak for other ports, but I know that some guys have been in TSU for over a year for Buffalo. I have friends at the port that said they are still overhired by about 15-20 guys. Do the math, it doesn't look good.
