I've read good reviews by female officers on this board and others. It seems like a good program.

I've told this to others that weren't in the military that the only way to get good at pushups is to do lots and lots of pushups. Try doing them facing a mirror also, it will help with your form and force you to keep your head/chin up which helps keep your rear end down (keys to form).

      Hope this helps.
Thanks for this! I too have been looking for a program to help with my push-ups! Its what I struggle with the most.

      • Here in Maine one of our local TV stations is doing a series of stories on Border Patrol and Protection (it's labeled Border Patrol but in the second story they showed last night there was also info on Border Protection). Check it out:

The first story they did was on the Office of Air and Marine if anyone is interested:

If they continue the stories this week, I'll post a link.

            • I was at the gym yesterday and they had the news on with the caption going. One of the stories was that they were holding a recruitment fair for CBP officer at the local college in Brownsville Texas from 8-4 today. Just thought the was odd knowing how backed up everything is right now. Any idea on why they might do this people?

I went to a hiring fair at JFK last winter just for S's and G's. At the time there was no open announcement and had not been one for a while and as it turns out there wasn't one for months after that. I asked one of the recruiters why they were having a job fair when they was no way of applying but couldn't get a straight answer other than that they need people at JFK all the time and they were losing 20-30 officers a month. That was over a year ago.

I just think that there is such a disconnect between the people who do the hiring and the ports that actually need officers that there is no rhyme or reason as to when or why they have job fairs or open up vacancy announcements. The only theory I have been able to come up with is that H.R. has a yearly budget to spend and employees to keep busy. They need to justify their jobs just like everyone else.

In this case it was for something they are actually hiring for.

Same went with working immigration cases with legacy immigration guys. These old and sometimes salty officers are the best teachers. Some of them may not be the nicest people, but the are good at what they do. And as for Mr. Kmart, do your really think your credentials are unique. Talk to some of the officers at your local port. You will see some pretty nice credentials to include, advanced degrees, military service (to include special forces) and prior law enforcement (state, local, and federal). Just some food for thought.
                      Word.

I'm learning a lot from them.

                      • Just wondering, since the diversity of the backgrounds came up, how are promotions evaluated? Does military experience trump education?? I'm sure time in and job performance are a huge factor, but just wondering who would get the job if it were between 2 people who were dead even in performance and time in, but one had military service and one had either a B.A. or an Masters degree? Hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question. Hopefully one of the seasoned gentlemen can provide some insight.

I am working myself up but I can not quite keep my arms tight to my body and my fitness expires next month. Does anyone know how strict they are on form? Are they looking for perfect military push ups, or is it ok that my elbows flare out? (Please keep in mind before anyone pokes fun at me for not being able to do push ups, I am female and I have been busting my butt to do the best that I can!)
I am right there with you!! I HATE PUSHUPS!! When I took my fitness test the lady was only concerned about my knees touching the ground and my chest hitting the block. I'm not saying that you shouldn't learn them the right way, but if you only have 1 month to get it right, I would focus on getting out at least the minimum of 20 then work on your form at that point. I dont know if you have an Iphone but there is this cool app that's called "hundred push-ups". It really builds you up in very little time. I used it my first go-round with the fitness test.

You should still be prepared, but I dont think they are doing fitness tests anymore when they expire. They are waiting until you get " the call" then testing you at that point before they hire you. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.
Good luck and send a PM to let me know how you're doing!!
