  • So I'm thinking of calling up my port and asking them whether or not they have an immediate need for new hires and whether I should wait a little longer for them to tell HQ they need people(and The Call from MHS) or whether I should look into other employment.

    Any thoughts?

    • I think that is a fantastic idea. Well is it the port who asks for bodies or is it HQ who decides X port needs bodies based on traffic and staff numbers?

        according to TSU:

        1. port tells hq how many warm bodies it needs
        2. hq tells TSU
        3. TSU calls warm bodies who have been referred to it

Assuming that you actually got through to a person high enough up in port management to know of what the port hiring needs were, I doubt they could tell you much. Many ports have little advance knowledge of new hires; sometimes it's not commonly known until days before the new guy reports for day 1. Any request that a port makes for personnel funding today is almost assuredly going to take months, maybe even years, to bounce around through the system before a training slot is set aside and a new hire is brought aboard...especially for a 'routine hire'. They might expedite hiring if a port shows a dire need for new people quickly.

Essentially, new hires are, for the most part, being brought on board from decisions and plans made 12-18-24 months or more ago. Chances are there's nothing short of a major event that'll change that.

As far you go...you need to do what you need to do. Only you know whether you can wait things out, pick up new employment, or both.

More or less correct, most of the time. HQ ultimately makes the call though, usually. The port can ask for whatever it wants, most likely it'll get whatever HQ decides on providing, based on arcane staffing rules and the needs of the service. That may be 100% of the request, some portion thereof, or rarely...more than asked for.

            • new website

my fellow coworker began this website for mainly cbp officers send him a create account with your name so he can look your government email along with location etc. this way the website forum for cbp will not just be about recruits who arent even cbp yet. people all across the country are already joining please do so we need to join up and unite sharing stories and information with fellow cbp members not the general publc trying to get in

there are also public sections for new recruits that actually get answers from cbp members themselves instead of the public guessing.

                    • Spoke with TSU and someone at the geo I applied for. Here's what I found out...Nothing! I know my geo has vacancies, but the person I spoke to at my geo pref. wasn't sure about the future of hiring there and mentioned that they expect changes, whatever that means. At the risk of sounding completely negative, what is going on? The budget passed. The appropriations bill was signed. Why would they leave spots open when the funding is there? Not that I don't know that there is a long process, but does anyone know what the plan is?

Not sure if anyone here applied for Import Specialist, but there was an announcement for LB port with many vacancies. I thought one would have to take a test, but I got my NOR already. Anyone know the hiring process for import specialist? like interview or some kind of test? thanks in advance.

                        • So do we get any benefit out of the FAMS hiring blast? I noticed on the article on Foxnews.com stated that CBP did a pre-clearance check prior to wheels up and another in flight check. The name of the terroist flagged during the second check. Adding more FAMS is great, but would it not seem more logical to add more CBP airport personnel and prevent the suspect from boarding in the plane in the first place?

It seems that the only benefit that we will get is FAM training at FLETC if we are ever lucky enough to be hired.

Not that I've seen...but who knows the long term fallout?

Related, I saw this and thought it might make things potentially interesting...
The federal government is scrambling to find ways to comply with President Obama's order to put more air marshals on flights after a botched Christmas Day airline terrorist attack, government sources have told CNN.

Hundreds of additional marshals could be "loaned" from the Secret Service and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, a U.S. official briefed on the investigation said. Another source said marshals could be drawn from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Additional federal air marshals are needed for high-priority international flights, with other law enforcement personnel filling in on key domestic flights, another source noted.

It's possible, though I think unlikely, that we(OFO) might see flying in our future. To what extent that'll effect new hires, if any, is wildly unknown at this time.

                              • Question:

I've been reading and hearing alot about transfers to different ports during a CBPO Tenure. I was told both how easy it was and others say how difficult it is. These were both told by friends in CBP. My BI (Former CBPO) also asked why I wanted to go to a port not in my residential area, and in conversation told me I shouldn't have a problem transfering if I wanted to, especially to my truely desired port.

The ports in question is a start in Virginia to a transfer to New York Area, specifically Newark Airport or Seaport. I read scenarios:

                                1: Man/Man swap
2: hardship transfer, which I don't even want to touch with a 40-yard stick.
                                3: Pre-Clearance or Academy Instructor.

Focusing on scenario 3, what does it take to be a CBPO pre-clearence officer (I liking the idea of being in a foreign country for a few years). What is the commitment, and what can CBP offer in terms of GEO preference once the commitment is over?

Don't get me wrong, I am totally open to the idea of going to Virginia, and I'm really liking the benefits of being a CBPO but it would be nice to know the different options available to me before I make a solid commitment instead of finding out I missed out on certain opportunities.
