  • Maybe I'm just naive, but I'm always surprised when I hear about how much partying goes on at FLETC.

My speculation is that ~1,000 folks retire every year, but the GS-12 upgrade will have all of the 2010, 2011, and 2012 retirees retiring at the beginning of 2013 when they get their high-3. This will leave CBP ~3,000 Officers short, there will be a mass hiring resulting in 15-day TSU waits, and all of us will be banging our heads against the wall.
        My WAG:

There'll be roughly 500 new hires this FY. That'll represent roughly 50% of attrition, but most likely less than 50%.

Your 1000 folks leaving will be more or less correct. The GS-12 will be less of a factor with the retirees, as most close to retirement are already making GS-12 pay and have already reached their high-3; where the GS-12 will mostly come into play is for those looking to leave the agency for other federal positions. Those folks will need to stay GS-12's for at east 90 days to lock in GS-12 pay...and a year to lock in the GS-12 grade. Less than 50% of those 1000 thinking of leaving will significantly delay their departure due to the GS-12's.

Hiring will pick up far sooner than in 3 years. 2000-3000 Officers represent 10-15% of the agency total. There's little chance of this agency operating at 85-90% of FTE Officers. Especially considering the high profile nature of this job, the recent terror attack and likelihood of future ones.

A year isn't too bad that's about how long I have before I get out.

That is if that's when it opens up. Here's hoping!

          • Not that I think that they're going to open another hiring announcement soon, but...

...hiring announcements are as political as much as anything else. If those in charge want to open a hiring announcement to appease people wanting to apply...they'll open up another hiring announcement, regardless of how many are in TSU.

              • Generally, it's more difficult for women to pass the pre-academy fitness requirements and the phyiscal aspects of the academy.
As a whole though, those who do make it to the end and graduate tend to end up as more capable Officers when compared to the "average guy".

                Luck,
                Mer.

                • ^lol i still had people about 20-50 pounds overweight (guys and girls)who graduated... requirements are still way to easy and no one has an excuse to fail them... only way you can actually get in shape in FLETC is doing it on your own cause the regular PT isnt a workout

Man I hope so!! I turn 36 tomorrow and cutting it close. That would be horrible to have my life on hold this long and not get it because of my age!! I will keep my head up though and pray for the best!! Never thought that I would ever get to an age where I was too old for a job!! 

I hope everyone had a great holiday!! 

Heh, I thought the same a good while back... Now I CLEARLY see why they have the 10/42 bar (AKA G-Bar) - entertainment center on campus vs nothing and having MASS Brunswick public media attention on the nut cases that have little / no regard for our position within the public's eye (perception is 9/10th reality... - so the media of today says...)

EVERYONE who lives in Brunswick - KNOWS who the locals are and who the Federal Law Enforcement Training students are ~ kinda stick out like pinoccio's nose in a crowd of noseless people.

I am all for having a kick arse time while off duty - though we all know what excess is and there is a mutual understanding of excess (i.e. hurling all over the bowling alley bathrooms, liquid courage actions) When darn perimeter security has to be called to dorms because a class captain is outside the dorms yipping like coyotes at 3-4am... and US Marshal students complain to campus security... that gets attention. Hopefully that attention stays with the true 3 week Boppers vs the CBPO's.

Also, as stated - this is the simple IF of IF's within the rumor mill...
IF... the big word here... IF the rumor mill churms out truth...
Each class holds x amount... Hopefully IF this is the case - X amount may start receiving their notifications / appointments soon for March. Though the qty of people waiting on that exceeds the qty of that/ those classes hold. Hopefully those who "want" the position will be the ones soon to receive location offers / appointments to start the ball rolling.

Look forward to reading the posts announcing letters / calls received! - Hopefully soon!
Live to work... or Work to live - YOUR Choice.

500 new hires this FY. Do you know roughly how much that is down from last year?
500 seems like its bad news. 10 classes of 50 or 20 classes of 25? If you divide 500 by the number of States that’s 10 new hires per state or the number of GEO locations (more than 50) the outlook does not look good, it's worse. I know hiring is not based equally among states or geo locations but when I broke it down this way I realized how small of a number 500 is, unless you are in TSU for the southern border and they allocate a large portion of that 500. Chances are a large portion of that 500 is for the southern border.

                              As I said...that's a Wild Assed Guess.

Based on the past hiring practices of the first quarter of FY2010 and the reasonable guess that we(OFO) can see roughly 10% of the workforce 'gone' at any particular time without seeing much for unmanageable effects. Much more than 10%...and I'm betting we'd need to adjust somewhere/somehow.

                              I could well be wrong.

I should clarify, when I mention hires I'm talking of people who EOD, graduate FLETC and successfully enter the CBP workforce. You are really only looking for an EOD date and a seat at FLETC. MY 500 hires could well be boiled down from 700 people given EOD dates, academy slots and either never bothered to show, quit, flunked the academy, or otherwise didn't make it past the cut.
