First, it really isn't forced 20 year retirement. It's forced retirement at age 57. The only way to be automatically retired after 20 years is to enter at/about the age of 37(excluding age waivers).

6C/12D(20 year retirement) came into existence in July of '08 for CBPO's. Every CBPO on board before then was grandfathered in and has no mandatory retirement.

The short answer is that it won't be until 2028 when we'll see the first of the automatically retired CBPO's. Those would be the handful of people hired in late 2008 who were 37 or older at the time of their EOD date.
It should also be noted that unless you are hired after you are 30 you will have to serve more than 20 years. The rule is 20 years of service and 50 years old, or 25 years of service and out. I've heard many people in their 20's saying they only need to work 20 years to retire.

As far as peace officer status, I would hate it. We are not trained on the local laws. We are not generally working in a job that has the LE mindset, and frankly I'd be scared to watch some of my co-workers try to work with the LE mindset, using only what they learned from TV.
But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new guards for their future security.

For the intelectually challenged: If the government screws the people enough, it is the right and responsibility of the people to revolt and form a new government.

This announcment closes 8 October at midnight. It's for a FS Diplomatic Security Special Agent. Chances are, most of us who qualified for CBP should qualify for this. Fill out some basic info, take a test online and see what happens. Takes about an hour... if you're bored... maybe give it a shot? Add it to the list?

Apparently the attrition rate for CBPO's has fallen to under 7% this year. It was about 9.5% in 2007. As far as "new hiring" goes, there are 85 new positions to be hired for in 2010.

What it means as far as I can tell is that the project hiring for FY10 is somewhere in the ball park of 1500. Roughly 31 classes. It looks like that 29 class figure is fairly accurate.

As far as I can tell, there are no projections for academy losses. With the new, tougher academy changes coming into play, I foresee higher FY10 academy attrition rates than those of FY09. Figure a 10% academy failure rate and that means roughly 3 more classes should be needed to be added to the program at the end to cover for those failures. There are still plenty of applicants who aim for the minimum standards and who spend far more time stuffing pizza into themselves in front of the TV rather than getting up and running 3 miles. If you really want to succeed, set lofty goals and get yourself into "good" shape.

Being that it's October, the fact that they'll probably add classes in June isn't likely to be much of a comfort to anyone, heh?
Thank you for doing the research for us!!!

If you dont have a wife and kids, GO FOR IT!! If you have a wife and kids, see if they would be willing to move. I am at a point in my life where I have realized, you only have one life. Do what is in your heart. Be happy!! Look at me, Im a 35 year old female that has 2 children. This is what I want to do so I'm doing it!! I had to put my life on hold when my son developed diabetes when he was a year old and never got to fulfill my dream career. Then after my children were both in school full time I had a job in financing offered to me and I took it. I hated every minute behind that desk with the caculator and computer. I was great at it, but hated it!! Everyone thinks I'm insane for doing this but it's what I want to do and it will make me a better person for it.
I have a very supportive family, not to mention my son thinks its cool that I'm going to be a federal officer like Jack Bower on 24 (I don't tell him any different!! LOL!! If he only knew!!)
... I don't know how old you are but coming from an old lady, go for your dream job!! We are behind you!! ... and just think of how happy you will make the guy in line behind you in TSU!!!

OK.... I'm done with my Oprah rant!!!

This really is a cool job. One of my good friends just got hired on as a DSS SA. I agree that it really is not conducive to family life though. It's also my understanding that DSS is just as competitive (if not more, given its size) as FBI. It's like being a foreign service officer with a gun.

I went through the interview process for this position last year. Suffice to say its more "white collar" than a CBPO position when it comes to their hiring process. Everything about it screams special agent though, its really something and it is quite a different animal than whats going on here. The job requires a Bachelors degree to start and the interview process is much more substantial in that you will have face-to-face contact with special agents who can and will mess with your head. Department of State is tough.

So, I dont mean to bash by any means but this is a position that I dont think many would be able to land.. and yes I passed the BEX hehe.

From my understanding it is practically unheard of to get in with DSS without prior law enforcement experience. However, my friend managed to do it. But he has a BA from Georgetown School of Foriegn Service, he's fluent in French, and has lived in Africa for about three summers.

                        Lucky so and so.

                          Truly.

Really, for the average CBPO in average circumstances, it likely does not and would not matter. Even in those states where we are considered to have peace officer status, it's not all that often that someone steps up and acts on it.
