I guess my only question is, for people who live up near Williston, VT (Just outside of Burlington), why on earth are the houses up there in the 200k to 500k range, with trailers being near the 200k range and nice houses in the 400k range.

I used to live in NE Pennsylvania and you could still find reasonable houses there in the 100-200k range (and we were only 1-2 hrs from NYC)...

I guess that is the only part that makes me hesitant to take the position (if offered of course).
Williston is likely the fastest growing town in VT and the housing prices there and in the surrounding areas have skyrocketed in the last 10 years or so. Mostly because it's grown into one of the major retail areas around Burlington, I'd guess. IBM being located in nearby Essex Junction probably has much to do with that as well.

I remember when the town was little more than a hamlet located amongst cattle pastures. That was as recent as 10-15 years ago.

        Maybe.

Having a 4 year degree qualifies you for a GS-05 position. Depending on your KASO's and history, you might also qualify with your general life experiences.

        • As a lot of people said we can pretty much forget about 2009. I was wondering if you think any calls would go out say late aug/sept for Oct classes, which will be from the 2010 budget? What do you guys think?

            • I would expect calls for the 2010 classes to start fairly soon. Not everyone, not every port, can start "at the drop of a hat". I'd be expecting calls soon, within the next two weeks probably.

Kind of early for a 2010 call. Unless you mean FY2010.

                • Ok guys! I start my pre academy this coming monday.....quite honestly, I wasn't ready to take the job, mainly because i needed to relocate at my own expense.....another reason, I don't feel physically fit to pass the 1.5 mi run at the academy.....any suggestions for the academy? How can you achieve the 6 laps under 15 minutes? Suggestions on the sit ups and push ups?...please guys, any little comment or suggestion would really help....I'm scared sh*tless (mainly cuz I'm a girl) but also because of the unknown....I know there's a few people that have posted here, that are already at the academy.....Thanks in advance!

Well i dont know your present physical shape, but i wouldnt stress too much. You have til the end of the academy to pass that gives you about 4 months or so to get into shape. Between p.t and d.t. and a.t. and all the walking you do there, plus however you train in your off time, you should be ready to pass it. Just remember if it is a big problem for you, dont get caught up in being lazy at pt, and taking the bus everywhere and sitting around drinking and eating away your free time. You should be fine, good luck!

Are you serious? Is this a joke? It's a little late to be asking now. I believe the new fitness standards are not implemented at FLETC until October 1st.
So you might be testing under the old fitness standards which are easier.
You don’t have to pass the fitness test until the end of training, so you have 14-16 weeks at FLETC to try and meet those standards. There is no secret to running, push ups and sit ups. It does not come overnight, so if you have not been preparing, you might be in trouble. From the first day of FLETC you have 12-14 weeks until the final test, Work hard! That’s how you will pass it at the end. Good luck!

As far as CBP usually goes, every year is a fiscal year. Yes, I meant FY10.

Actually as of the beginning of July - I think that was about CBPI 955 or so (???) The new PT standards are in play.
15min 1.5mile run, etc. (edit: I'll check into this and post the status of the raised PT standards - About time they raised them or soon to do such...)

TBH 15min 1.5 is not too bad... ESPECIALLY considering your 1 month at the main location - THEN to academy - that means you will be there around, early Sept. It will cool down by the time you get to your final PEB (Run, etc.)

Roxy, you are in a much better time frame as you are not dealing with the bugs from spring... and the heat of dead summer. Humidity will still be present - though it is tolerable. ALSO, if you eat properly - (Not saying much for FLETC FOOD! LOL!) and exercise for the better constitution of your self - the humidity will help sweat off a couple to boot.
Hey, the glass is half full or half empty - I'll take it half full and be positive of the humidity - It will not change if you are negative towards such.

As UoFU76 states - walk as much as possible. It is JUST AS ANYWHERE! If you hang with the group who just want to get by... well, you most likely will get by... and that is it. If you want to improve yourself - physically and mentally - than find that person(s) that you can gain from and support eachother through the months. Mind you as the months continue - tempers tend to rise in class and a few will / may not be with you by Graduation... Though you are there to succeed! Not party - because you feel you can, Not yip like a damn fool coyote at 3am because you feel you can and give the REST OF CBP a bad rap in the eyes of ICE, Marshals, USSS, etc... Leave the stupidity to the 3 week academy peeps... and focus on the reason you are there. THUS CHOOSE YOUR FRIENDS WISELY.

Other than that... I take it you have not run in a while to be concerned with your time... I would suggest - jog a 1.5 mile (typically 6 laps on a track) - DO NOT STOP, DO NOT WALK... Slow jog if needed and make it your only stipulation that you do not walk / stop. If you do that... you are about 90% sure to make a 1.5 mile run around 15min. Running is ALL MENTAL... your legs may burn a bit - think about something you enjoy...

Just remember it is 15 minutes of your LIFE to make or break you. If you would break from that - this is prob not a job for you... If you would not break from such - welcome and best of success!

                            • Question:

I applied for East Texas in 08. I did not hear anything, so applied under the new announcement in early 09. I received a TO after the second application. I would prefer to stick with the location I have the TO for. How do I withdraw the second application so it does not get switched all of the sudden?

                              • Going to the academy unprepared fitness-wise is often a recipe for failure.

                                Note to applicants:

You have months, perhaps years waiting between deciding to apply for this job and actually getting the call. Get up off the couch, turn off the TV, toss out the nachos and get going and run...run again and exercise... push-ups, pull-ups, chin-ups, sit-ups, flutter kicks, etc.

Get yourself in decent shape before the academy. That's a key for success. The people who wait are usually the people who fail.
