  • How to become a cop in NJ

I recently graduated college and am living in NJ. I am trying to get into the law enforcement field, and I have been able to find some openings with local police departments, but they say you need some kind of certification to apply. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what is a good way to get into the law enforcement field in the NJ area, or a way to get the proper certification I might need. Especially at the local level.

If can afford to pay a couple thousand out of your own pocket, and then be out of work for 4-5 months, you could do "alternate route", which means put yourself through the police academy. That gets you your PTC certification to work as a police officer in NJ.

If by certification you mean certified on a list for a civil service agency, you have to take the civil service test, which is offered statewide every 2 years. There is info on the state Department of Personnel web site. Keep in mind that many local PD's that use civil service require local or county residency at the time you register for the test.

              ^exactly

jking...there are some departments that do not require you be PTC certified and are not civil service. To clarify...at these departments you apply, take their test (Chiefs test) and if they hire you they send you through the academy.
I hope that made sense...I'm exhausted lol

goto NJDOP.co (NJ Dept of Personnel). They're giving the civil service test in March 2006. Get an app from the site and apply. Check out NJLawman.com also

I think most agencies in NJ will still sponsor you to go through the academy. Most agencies in NJ require you to take the Civil Service Exam, but like NJladyGlock21 said, there are some agencies that only require local testing (Chief's test). Usually after you are selected after the written test (and other physical & psychological tsets) you are hired and sent to an academy. It will vary by agency.
If it wasn't for STUPID PEOPLE I'd be unemployed.

Most non-DOP agencies only hire applicants w/ PTC certs, at least in my experience. Or the person w/ the most political hooks. The test scores don't necessarily control anything. The PD's in Bergen County, for example, offer the test for one position, charge $100-$150 to take the test, and then hire the mayor's son who knew he was getting the job all along. At best, it's an uphill battle getting hired at a non-DOP agency w/o PTC or hooks.

The DOP agencies have to follow the rule of 3, which means they have to offer the job to one of the top three scorers on the list. However, if they really want to get down the list to the person they want, they can fail people for BS stuff on the BI or medical/psych.
