  • I haven't heard anything other than March. That being said I heard part of the academy renovation includes asbestos removal. If that's the case I'd listen to the contractor over the Trooper.

Either way hopefully it will be soon. Good luck to all.

I'm only part of the roof crew and we are winding down. The nice weather certainly sped up the process. I can tell you right now that the academy would not have started this soon having had colder weather. OSHA and OGS would not permit us working above people with the lifting and lowering of materials. But that doesn't matter now since there will be a March start date. As a state worker I'm sure you know the "safety" precautions that take place and the red tape that is drawn with any state project. Especially one that has OGS administration a few buildings over. So don't ever be surprised if the state police is rolling along with processing only to be told "no" in a few weeks. It can happen, not saying it is, but it really is a disgusting process that the taxpayer pays the price for.

Please don't think I'm trying to stir up any trouble, I'm only trying to provide insight and put my two cents in since so many of you have shared yours. Again, please note that I have been doing state buildings for 10 years and sooooo many times the agency is left out of the loop. OGS is a mess with beauracratic hotheads who think they're more important than the next guy. The police administrationg fight with OGS, OGS fights with SUNY, SUNY fights with SEMO, they all are a bunch of children who can't get along.......just ask any trooper how much politics and nonsense there is outside of your patrol car.

      • I'm curious since the academy is obviously part of a complex of several state buildings, how many buildings make up the academy? I know we've been in 24 for any processing. StanleyVega mentions building 22, are they also working on 24?

Building 24 is the academy and 22 is administration. We were doing the roof on both. Those are the only two buildings for State Police, each being a separate building. It's a complex built back in the 1950's and 60's. A lot of the buildings are quite dated. The NYSP have been fortunate to get some updates throughout the years. Building 17 which is the boiler house, looks like something from a 1950s fallout shelter.

The hardest part of working there is that the Detp. of Labor is there. So obviously at any time we are working there could be an inspector watching and ready to write fines. It's difficult enough to work "safely", having two men walk with forklift, having spotters when lifting, and other nonsense. With the Dept. of Labor onsite it just takes that much longer. They are always inspecting which means you have to halt work. It's a tediuos process working there but I make prevailing wage so I'll happy sit and collect a hefty check while some white hardhat gets his rocks off

I dont think your stirring up anything. I completely agree with your assessment and it's good info to have. The renovation has added additional unique planning elements that will play a big factor in the class date and are outside the control of division. I mean it when I say, in this particular case, I would take the word of someone working on the building over someone working in it.

              • Not sure. Does anyone know how many were at the medical on Saturday. It seemed like there were a lot while I was there.

                • There were different times for people but the one trooper who escorted us 730 said he heard a class of 250.

Seemed like there were a lot of new people there at my time, on top of the people returning a second time to redo the physical.

I would assume that they would not have another processing weekend at least till this academy gets under way, last year the next one started in May/June, for the fall class.

Last year I believe they had two. One in March and a lot of people failed so they had a second processing weekend in May.

                              • Hey Guys, I was not at the last medical. However, I did get the invite to this medical. From what I heard there was about 350 canidates at this medical. I think that there were about 250 at the last medical, maybe 180-190 where going to get the invite to the academy. Then they postponed it, so now the 250 that went to the last medical I feel are the candidates going to go to the academy this time. Some of the extras at this medical will be backfill and the rest as long as you stay clean and fit will be good for whenever the next academy is. Only bad thing, we'll prob have to do everything over again.
