    • as per pba website

I wanted to give my thoughts on some recent announcements by Division regarding member safety. The announcement that Division was purchasing 3,500 collapsible batons was something the PBA has been communicating with Division with for quite a while, in fact since the Bennett administration. Superintendent Preston Felton should be commended to listening to the PBA’s and members’ communications on this potentially life and death issue, and he properly made the decision to purchase these much needed and long overdue weapons. These batons will fill a crucial gap in the force continuum available on our members’ gun belts and it is quite welcome and appreciated.

Anyone who took the 2004 tell me what the test was like, math, reading comprehension and so on???

Thanks in advance for any useful information.
The 2004 test was different that other tests administered. Half the questions were personality questions. Basically they asked a question and your response was a) strongly agree b) somewhat agree c) no opinion d) somewhat disagree and e) strongly disagree. You cannot study for this portion of the test...

The academic portion is very easy if you passed grade school. I left confident I answered every question correct.

You local recruiting office will have practice exams and may give you a list of commonly used words which are often misspelled. ( or is it mispelled )

Yes. I am told by my recruiter that there will be tutorials in December (here in Troop D at least). They will also be offering study guides on the website. I also heard of a PAT tutorial being offered in the past, that would be nice also.

SDT coming through as always. Thanks!

EDIT: After reading that I realize I'm already on the program (I've devised it from an old PT conditioning part of the NYSP website). It works and I have noticed a difference in myself.

                • I just got a call from an Investigator to do my Background for SP Communications Specialist in Albany or Wilton. Since I'm already in the process for State Park Police, they won't be mad if I choose to do that for a couple of months and then do that will they?

I don't see that hurting you. Afterall you would be leaving one state job for another state job. While it may be an irritant for your immediate supervisors, they are big boys and girls and won't take it personally.

ooooo it sounds a lot like the SCPD test I took on June 9th, I took a prep course and the instructor said on those type of questions never put down sometimes and unsure because you don't get any points for that answer, I'm going to try to stop by my recruiter office of troop L and see if he has any study guides that I could have.thanks a lot GrayPatriot

                      • I recently posted a thread about applying to the NYPD, which I still plan on doing, but of course I have to try the state police as well. I just paid my $20 last night to apply for the exam. After doing so, I read up some more about the NYSP and became a little discouraged. I'm an Asian-American and from what I understand, there are either very few or no Asian troopers at all. I know that the NYSP is an "equal-opportunity employer" like most are, but realistically am I at a disadvantage just for being what I am? Sorry, I'm not trying to sidetrack this thread at all. I really want to try for the NYSP, which is why it would help if some of you more experienced members can tell me if there actually are any Asian NY State Troopers around. It would certainly make me feel more comfortable taking the test come January.

mmm how are you on a disadvantage just because of your ethnicity?????,
I'm a minority too Hispanic and I’m not worry about applying to NYSP, I have everything they require and more, I’m 20 speak English, Spanish, ASL, I’ll have my BA degree in pre-law by next may that gives me 120 college credits, and I’m not worry about applying to the department at all (hopefully I'll get it because it's my dream career ), if you have the qualifications and pass all the test you should get the job and if you feel that you are discriminated against because of your race while in the department just sue the State and the agency if you can prove it. That’s just my 2cents on that subject.

p.s NYPD is the most diverse agency in NYS that you'll probably find.

Do you mean you are from a Latin country and you speak Spanish?

I worked in the Bronx and I understand some Latin’s referred to themselves as "Spanish". If you are from Spain be careful what box you check in your application because you are not a minority.

You seem like a sharp guy from your posts, good luck.

lol you caught me, I always check Hispanic but for some reason I refer to myself as Spanish and a lot of Hispanic ppl do too, I don't know why.
oo and also I forgot to mention it before but just because you're a minority doesn't put you in a disadvantage if anything it gives you a little of an advantage because departments are always looking for minorities.

Another Question for you Graystate, a lot of my friends are not taking the test for NYSP because they think there's nothing to do upstate and so on (but a lot of parts in upstate have gun and drug problems from my understanding from what this other trooper told me), and also they don't like the fact that their backup is 20-30mins away and so on which is the main fact that turns them off but w/e that's good for me less competition for me, but my question to you is usually how far away is your nearest backup?
