  • This is a very interesting documentary: The Meth Epidemic on Frontline PBS. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/meth/
We watched this in one of our CRJ classes a few years ago, and it was on the other night. The most memorable aspect of the program is that they show booking photos of several individuals at different points in their meth use, and the change in appearance over a relatively short period of time is absolutely astounding.

    • NY Police Man,

First of all, my original response to your question about Sergeant's base pay was not at all intended to be rude in any way. I was trying to help point you in the right direction. I meant what I said. Read and study www.nytrooper.com as well as www.troopers.ny.gov.
A final word: Many of the troopers here are highly respected by those of us that have been members here on this forum for a long time. In addition, many of them have roles in the hiring process and it would behoove you to discontinue the attitude that you are portraying. Best wishes is your future endeavors.

See I told you I've made mistakes in questioning the people that take the time to post on here. I would say I'm not an *%$^%# but my soon to be ex-wife may beg to differ.

        • Hey any word when they will be doing a processing for the next academy class? And if so what rank number will they be reaching to.

          • Not trying to become a trooper but also not trying to stir the pot. Just simply looking for an answer from a respected trooper. I was curious as to compare salaries. Good luck in your future career as a trooper, solid job with stand up guys. As for someone's post a few years ago, glad you haven't become an ahole, but sometimes you should be.

            • If you want to compare salaries you can download the trooper's contract, just google it. Also www.seethroughny.com will give you an idea.

Another purpose of this forum is to possibly have someone you already know the 1st week of the academy. I've been lurking for a long time but no movement makes for a boring thread.

                    • Very happy to see new classes starting up in 2012, good for you guys/gals that kept the faith and will enter the Academy this year.

A fine organization and a worthy life's (or at least till you have your 'time in') calling.

Q; What is the approximate historic DOR rate for prior classes ?

                      230 enter (140 + 90) ... # come out the other end ?

Aside; Thanks to the Trooper in Troop B that stopped me and extended a courtesy.

A lesson learned, just like cell phones, always pull over when arguing with Wife...the ticket you save may be your own.

                      • Been lurking here for a while now. Figured now is as good a time as any to post.

Good luck to all those that are in these final stages for the upcoming academy class. Been a long time coming for all those who took the test way back when.

Hope to see some of you this upcoming weekend and then patiently await the letter in the mail. I also just recently made my hometown PD's reserve list. So if this does not work for NY State, I will have another position available to me. But the position of trooper has been my dream and goal.

Certainly been a long time coming...congrats on making your local PD's list. Let's hope things move quickly and things fall into place for those that have been waiting over 4 years for this opportunity !

Looking forward to heading up there this Saturday...

                              • So the next class is set to begin in April. In the past, I've posted some informational items that may answer some questions, and ease the way into academy life. Below is a partial list of suggestions.

If you know an incumbent Trooper, you may want to review this list with him/her. If not, you can PM me.

                                1) Be punctual. Don't be late for anything. If they say you have to be there by 5:00pm, they don't mean 5:02pm.
                                5:02 pm is late.

                                2) You stay very busy at the academy, especially the first few weeks. It's a very full day. You will need to keep your energy levels up. So bring some snacks to munch on throughout the day. But bring healthy snacks, granola bars, fresh fuit, etc. It's all about team work, so bring some to share with your quadmates too.

                                3) The last thing you want to do is to get caught speeding on your way to the academy. If you have a radar detector, use it. Borrow one if you can.

                                4) The academy is about 6 months long. You are going to want to make yourself comfortable in the dorms. So plan on bringing some small (emphasize small) kitchen appliances, such as a dorm size refrigerator and microwave oven. You don't want two frig's and no mircrowave, so save this step for at least week two, so you can cooridnate with your quadmates. I understand K cups are available in the canteen now, for you coffee drinkers.

                                5) Wall decorations are acceptable, but keep it clean. Sports posters are OK, but no swimsuit models. I'll bet Eli Manning is popular right now, with the NY Giants having won the Super Bowl.

                                6) When moving your stuff into the dorms, there is a flat bed cart you can use for the heavy stuff. There is just one available, so don't hog it. If you need it, just ask the First Sergeant for it. There is also a shopping cart, but it has a squeeky wheel, so it's not used much.
