nobody's gonna bust on you for coming to this thread for direction.....its 90% carried by perspective troopers.....

anyway, the standard advice i give to aspiring LEO's, is to NOT get a degree in CJ unless you are otherwise interested in pursuing a law degree or some other law profession. its a pretty useless degree ( i have one) and if i didn't get this job it would have been a COMPLETE waste of 3yrs. get a degree in a field you are interested in if you don't get into police work. just take a few CJ classes as electives. the ones that will help you IF you do get on the job/academy will be criminal law and constitutional law (perhaps others can add to that list) because you'll be working out of the NYS penal law. (if you're in a NY school anyway.).......good luck and keep your nose clean

Or if you do get hired and... end up hurt/disabled... or if you like some find out that real police work isn't what you though it was and don't like the life/politics/BS of being a police officer.

Good advice from both DR. P. and 4985. The CJ degree will not help you get hired more than any other degree. Prepare yourself for a life in a field you would enjoy, and if the NYSP job comes along, jump on it. It may be several years before we hire, but that doesn't hurt you, since you are still in HS.

Keep your nose clean, stay physically fit, get a good education. Best advise I can give any HS student.

I am currently minoring in CJ and I would say as well major in something other than CJ. Like everyone here has said. I'm majoring in Sport Management. Either way do something that you want to do in college because nothing is worse than not being interested in your major. It really makes things very hard. Studying is your best friend! Don't go out and party to much but leave some time for fun! Good luck.

Is there a chance that you all could be laid off? I am waiting to take the next test. If they are talking laying off current members I'd assume they probably would not open another test for years.

I have been working with a recruiter who assured me to just ride out the storm and that the layoffs would only affect those civilian employees and not uniformed Troopers. Is this no longer the case?

Nobody knows. I suppose is has to be considered as a posiibility. But I would hope there is another way to address the fiscal crunch. In fact, I emailed my PBA guy with suggestion for another way.

It's probably too early to hope for a new New York State Police test (so I can take it), but it would be pretty beast if it did happen late 2011.

I doubt you will see another test for sometime. I processed in Albany March 09 and Backround was completed in June 09, been playing the waiting game ever since. Hope something breaks loose soon, maybe the new governor will put a class in when he takes office, wishful thinking.

Hopefully the snow holds off so I can drive it hard for a couple of hours before pairing up... my 6'4" partner wont fit so it will be a tahoe after midnight but at least I will get to have a little fun.
