  • Well gents, I appreciate your input on this matter. However, I do have five years worth of AD service in the Marine Corps. A college education is a personal goal for me; I am trying to put into place a back up plan if the State Police does not work out. Atleast then I will not only have military experience but also a college education. Losing seniority and potential pay is not a concern, but what is a concern is potentially not following through on a realistic goal of mine.

Many have posted against my posts about the worth of college degrees when it comes to this job... but I stand behind my thinking... I blew (drank) 3 years in an expensive private college before realizing (partying my way out) that the military is all you really need to grow up and be very marketable to any industry... expecially one that requires that you 1.) follow instruction and 2.) are able to make a command decision.

I work with college graduates just a I work with prior military. I would much rather goto a complaint that has hair on it with a military vet that has life experience than some college kid who knows very little other than what 'the book' tells him.

Kinda like the old saying in computer games... save early and save often. Process as soon as you are able. If you don't get selected for the class... keep going with your education and process again till you get told to go away, or are too old.
Could not have said it better.

I was thinking about deferring graduate school until January, in hopes that I will have a better understanding of when I may be called for the Troopers. Anyone have any advice on this issue?
You don't have to close any doors here. Go to graduate school. Who knows if you will ultimately get hired by the Troopers. Some things are beyond your control. Maybe you will fail the eyesight exam, for example.

Go to grad school, continue processing with the Troopers. If the Troopers offer you a job, take it and quit grad school, since NYSP is your ultimate goal.

No need to close any doors just yet.

            • I finally located the letter with my score on it from the 2001 test... I thought I did better than I actually did. I only managed a 178.54 with my vet points which put me 568 on the list of about 12K. I'm not as smart as I thought

                • Thank you SDT I can't wait to start processing, I hope to begin this summer. However, you are right, I have to keep all doors open and continue my education as well.

                  • Anybody thinking about applying for the civilian communications specialist position that's currently advertised on nytrooper.com?

Right now, I am processing with one agency and deferred/awaiting canvass letters from about 20+ separate agencies. I am also planning on testing with one other PD in the fall and applying for some support positions with the Feds in Nov/Dec. I am contemplating whether or not I should apply to take the test of thos position too.

Why not, you have taken every other test/exam that is out there. That reminds me, how is the position of guarding Punxsutawney Phil coming along?

If a SUNY spot or even better a NYSPP spot opens up for you I would jump at it. The park police academy is a lot like our academy and those guys are really squared away...

Thats pretty much what I will be doing in the fall is applying for every police officer exam in the state. The past few years I would generally apply for 1 or 2 exams a year but this fall I'm going full speed and applying for everything in the sun.

Im performing an internship with a local PD and I asked a trooper which police department responds to the majority of the calls between the Sheriffs department in the county I live in and NYSP and he said the NYSP responds to most of the calls. So both departments perform pretty much the same police functions however the big difference is that the troopers are paid twice as much. I took the civil service test for the sheriff's but the problem is the pay isn't that good but the one positive is that they have a take home car which is good if you want to save on gas.

                        • I have been reading for a while but wanted to finally post. Add me to the list of people who did not do so well. 81 and a rank around 11,000. I have scored much better on other exams, and at orientation I got every question right on the practice exam. However, I did say when I finished the exam, "I felt I got nearly all of the first half right, but I have no clue about that personality profile section." Sure enough, I clearly didn't have a clue. I doubt I see a cavas letter at 11,000, but there are some things I can't control.

You'd be surprised how fast the list starts moving once the first couple of classes have proscessed... people move on with their lives and take other jobs and things like that.... it will be a while before you are called but you might get a letter in 3 years.

NYSPP is moving along. They have been interviewing neighbors and calling references and employers so I assume my background is being started. I have done everything else except the poly.

NYSPP would be a great gig. However, when I talked to the SGT at my local office, he said that a lot of their seasonal rangers have applied and that they are usually the first to get in. That, coupled with the fact that I am still a youngin', may make it hard for me (even if I do pass all the stages).

Im in the same ballpark as you. I plan on jumping on a local PD to get the experience until NYSP calls and hopefully works out
