I wish someone told me that as being a state employee I still pay for certain procedures with GHI.

Not everything is covered and cerain things are not covered 100%. Also GHI is not accepted at every dental or vision office.

WAIT.....I see I have a fingernail that has some growth that hasn't been chewed down to a nub.......

At least you don't have to pay anything out of your check for the vision/dental.

Besides having about 15 troopers working downstairs from me as I am writing this, I personally know 3, one of whom I went to high school with graduated the academy at the end of Feb. As for the military special ops... I have another friend who just got got his orders that he is heading out for his 2nd tour with special ops and a coreman who just got back from his 2nd tour after being out in the desert with marines and seals for 6 months.

Every time my buddy comes back we go to the casino for a day or two (he's stationed in Camp Lejeune) its a 1 hr and 1/2 ride to the casino. During which time he has no qualms telling me about his "experiences" in the military (least the ones he can).

And no I don't think its a cakewalk but all this stuff about not being able to **** and crap, these guys should know what their getting into its not like their recruiting high school freshman.

              • You guys seriously need to chill. Stress is what you make it. If the thought of people yelling in your face scares you then you’re a sissy and probably shouldn’t be in law enforcement anyway.

The thought of getting yelled at does not scare me Jarhead. But that picture for your avatar does!

There are things that I did in the military that were harder and there were things that I did in the military that were no where near is hard. The difference is in Albany it is not just a gut check. You are also expected to be able to preform academically at close to a collegiate level while under all that stress. This is where it becomes difficult even for the prior service folks. My class had representatives from all the branches including the coast guard. We lost 2 Airmen and 1 Marine all to academics. Regardless of your background nobody gets a free pass up there.

With all do respect to those who have done neither there are people who do and then there are people who know people who do. I generally don't put a lot of stock in what "people who know people" have to say. If being in the military or being in LEO wasn't your bag more power to you but then you have pretty much excused yourself from a conversation about the training.
I agree with you on the "people who know people" idealism, you don't know me from anywhere besides this forum, which is no place to get an accurate estimation of someones character. So I'm just going to stop and not gonna even try to say I know anything regarding law enforcement from in-depth experience, besides what my friends/family, and professors have told me.

Anyway, NYIllini judging by your signature I assume you left with the rank of capt? I'm curious, why didn't you go FBI or other Federal? Personal reasons I would assume.

                    • Sorry if I offended anyone. Thick skins are a neccesity on this job, so I apologize if it sounded gruff. It was not meant that way. I was just trying to say this is not a college, and it is not the military. It is a combination of both. I have been in the Army, have a college degree, and am a Trooper, and have enjoyed all experiences. You hit the nail on the head when you talk about combining physical stress and academic stress together. Good luck to everyone in the Academy now, and those waiting on their scores.

I always used my workouts as a way to combat my academic stress. I should be good.

                              • Blah, I talked to a USSS SAC and it was all he could do to talk about how professional the NYSP were. On the other side, I have heard many not so positive things about the FBI from a Deputy US Marshal. I don't favor one over the other for necessarily inherent reasons.

I was just curious, being a military officer is a great place to get excellent leadership exp, you can literally do anything with it. I wanted to see why you choose what you did because with that BG you could have gone into allot of different things.
