Acting Superintendent Felton is retiring according to www.troopers.state.ny.us.
Who is going to replace him, and how does that work? Is it automatically the next one down the rank (deputy super. then becomes super.?) or is there some other process?
Thanks!
He is free to choose whoever he likes. Frequently, the next in line is chosen (that would be the First Deputy Superintendent), but sometimes a person from outside is chosen.
It's entirely up to the Governor. You can now follow me on twitter.Comment

Being that I heard Mr. Felton was a "Trooper guy," who basically understood first-hand what it is to be a Trooper, I am a bit saddened to hear news about his retirement.
However, whoever takes his position as of April 4th, will hopefully bring just as much to the table in the forms of leadership and understanding. Got to have faith.Comment

Superintendent Felton was in the room next to mine in the academy so we were told to be extra quiet in that room. He always greeted the recruits with a smile and if we didn't know any better we wouldn't know he was the #2 guy, at the time. He appeared to be just a guy in a suit who was very polite and always smiled. I for one will be sorry to see him go...Comment
