  • Thanks GrayState. I am hoping to score high enough to be ranked within the top 2000. That puts me in at least the second processing hopefully.

Yes, it just might. But keep in mind that there are a lot more veterens now than before 9/11, and therefore, more people with veterens points.

Also, the ratios get higher as the list ages. When it is brand new (such as the first class) I would expect the ratio of rejections to be lower. Over time, people move on with their lives and tend to turn the job down or not show up for further procesing.

Just don't get discouraged. I was in the second class from my list, and it still took over a year.

Thanks SDT. The veterans are what scare me the most. I hope they don't push me out of eligibility altogether. The second class would actually be better for me too, because then I can finish school up in December and graduate early. Thanks for all the info.

          • Update...

My BI called me to let me know he is finalizing my paperwork to send to Albany next week. Hopefully this means I will be in this next class being my list # was in the high 5k range and I deferred for over a year. My BI says I should make this class but only the guy in the sky really knows

Good luck to everyone riding in the same boat as me... I hope someone brought the paddles and anchor...

            • I probably already know the answer to this but here it goes: During NYSP Academy training, are recruits given time off for Thanksgiving and Christmas if it falls on a weekday?

I've heard it said that recruits get up at 5:00am and are "not allowed" to go to bed until 10pm. This may have been answered before, but could one of the recent (I know it's changed over the years) academy graduates run us through what a typical day in the academy is like, 5am-10pm?

              Thanks!

For anyone who was wondering... Taking the polygraph the second time with the same investigator in the same room a year later, is just as much fun as the first time.

Did they make you do the full 5 hours?

Years ago when I worked as a rep. for an airline I traveled to the south/west coast alot and would stay in different places I would talk to many LEO's from the areas I visited and when I would hear some of their common war stories, they made places like east NY, Flatbush and Harlem look like Candy Land. I was staying in the LAX area at a hotel right next to the Burger King where two FBI agents were gunned down by gang members in broad daylight full of customers. If something like that happens here it is talked about for years. Over their it is just another day gone bad. A friend of mine left the NYC area for LAPD and was back in 8 months after his partner was shot at by gang members walking into his house after a midnight tour. Another friend went to GA state police and was back after only 14 months when he realized how many narcotics and gun runners passed through GA.

Just about all of us on this forum are here because at one point or another we dreamed of being a LEO, but you also dream of staying alive to enjoy life a bit.

Point being... these places out south/west go through so many officers and are constantly hiring because of early retirements due to on the job injuries; some who just can't take near death incidents every other day or officers who are killed. Every time an officer goes down in these place it results in a large number of early leaves by other officers. This is why most LED's like LAPD give a walk in test once a week in several testing sites throughout the county.

Keep in mind too that unless you lived in any of these areas at one time, it is a different way of life. People downstate in NY think life is very different upstate, but it is a good different, a safer different. Yes, there is crime every place you go, including upstate, but how much is what matters. For your own safety and sanity, heavily research and visit an area you want to work in before signing your life away.

... and that's one to grow on.
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!! Its not that bad "out here" (CA.) well, actually sometimes it is... We need officers becuase alot of jobs are available here with LESS stringent standards and give MORE personal freedom( you can be a store mgr,or IT specialist making $60K yr and having weekends off comapred to the hell of 18 mos of tarining and probation an Avg CA.police officer goes thru just to get the job and $60K/yr to start) funny but there have been plenty of shootings near my area of patrol (LAX) as well as L.A>, yet YOU are the first I've seen to actualy acknowledge that the level of violence on the West coast is HIGHER than what you may see on the eatcoast( I've had folks visit and claim that L.A.,Oakland ,and the southwest were "WEAK"-until the sun went down!) but in all reality,we pay very well and alot of the reason for the openings-beyond what I mentioned above,is the DROP program and most cities /agencies haing the 3%@50/55 PERs retirement; many officers have saved their $$$,bought homes in other Western states(WA,OR,Co.NV,ID,AZ,TX) and are leaving the job with medical and 75% to 90% of the salaries-we are taking the late 70s to early 80s generation of street coppers-many hard core gunslingers, which is leaving a SERIOUS hole in alot of depts experience and manpower deployments! come WESt young man! I've followed the "horror" stories of guys in NY state waiting yrs to get a chance to test- in L.A. and many So.Cal /nor cal depts, you cann test and be on the job in as little as 6-9 mos !plus ,despite our fires, and earthquakes- we;ve got great weather all yr,and all the things yo could find in NY- Mtns, valleys, ski season,beaches,lakes,4X4 in the desert, camping and fishing-and you can still find decent housing and schools.... www.lapdonline.com, www.LASD.org ,www.chp.ca.gov ,www.laxpd.com , www.post.ca.gov, http//:santamonicapd.org ,www.sfgov.org/site/police

Haha I wish I could earn the title of recruit. I'm already tired of being an "applicant" or a "candidate".
