    a few questions:

    1. How are initial assignments decided? Do they take into account preference or where you live? Is it always a patrol?

    2. Is it possible to request a different patrol assaingment, such as one closer to home? Are the Manhatten patrols the most competitive?

    3. Are promotions to SGT, LT, and CPT based entirely on exams? What are the other factors? Educational requirements?

    4. What is the process like for getting into specialty units such as narcotics and SWAT? What is the process like for becoming a detective?

    5. What is a typical schedule for a patrol officer? Are compressed work schedules available?

Is there an age at which you are required to retire?

Can someone explain the Variable Supplement fund, for retired and non-retred officers?

The put you where they want to. The dream sheet is just that. Impact, learn that word.
        2. Is it possible to request a different patrol assaingment, such as one closer to home? Are the Manhatten patrols the most competitive?
You can request all you want but unless you have someone capt or above putting in a call, you will get what you get. All the pooh boys want Manhatten because its soft for the most part. If you want to be a cop why would you want to go to the softest part of town. Think 73. Be ready for the incoming airmail when you collar somebodys babys daddy.
        3. Are promotions to SGT, LT, and CPT based entirely on exams? What are the other factors? Educational requirements? Mostly the test but how many sick days you have and where you work will make a difference. Working in the 6 ain't gonna help. Working in the 41 will. But then again getting a soft pct like MTS can help you develop a hook and that is what the job is all about.

        4. What is the process like for getting into specialty units such as narcotics and SWAT? What is the process like for becoming a detective? HOOK my man if you want ESU, that is what its called in the nypd. You have to have a big hook to get into ESU. If you want to become a det then after you are a 3 yr wonder go into narcotics. Stay alive there for a couple of years and you get your gold shield, that is if you are sill alive. By the way do you know that starting pay for jan is now 25100.00 You will not be able to live on that money. Especially after you have to buy 3000 dollars worth of equipment your 1st year.
