A NYC Special Patrolman is deputized and sworn by the NYPD to be a Peace Officer, usually when that person is employed by a corporation or other private entity. Some city agencies use "specials" such as transit, housing, and the taxi and limo commission. It was originally a designation given to housing and transit cops prior to the formation of the NYC Transit Police and NYC Housing Police (who have both since been absorbed into the NYPD as transit bureau and housing bureau).
