  • employment in kansas

    Hello everybody,

I want to go into LE after I get my BA next spring from KU (majors = psych & religion), and I was wondering if anyone knew about the prospects in S. Central Kansas. My wife is originally from Newton and wants to settle in or around Wichita when we move out of Lawrence. I know they have an applicant pool, but I was wondering how often they processed new officers. If anyone had any info on this or any other departments in that area (good or bad), it would be appreciated.

I've also been looking at KHP, but I'm assuming that you can't be too picky about where you go (applicants must "Be Willing to Live and Work Anywhere within the State of Kansas") - I'd hate to end up back out in the NW!!

I was wondering about things like who is hiring and how often, but also just any opinions, or advice on backgrounds, hiring processes, etc.

I was also worried that maybe my experience might not be as strong...As far as education, aside from my BA I'll have a basic understanding of Spanish (enough to carry a general conversation but not enough to translate verbatim), and I will have taken several classes that relate directly to LE. My significant work experience is that I've worked for Dillons loss prevention for the past few years, and just started as a civilian "safety/security officer" with the KU police department. I didn't know if there was anything else I could do that would help my application with any of the area depts.

I won't be applying for another year, but I still try to browse around to see who's hiring.

The Wichita Police Department is always taking applications and run about two academy's a year. I worked for them and I would suggest to stay away from them. There is some major moral issues as well as micromanagement issues. But they start at about $17 hr. and just started working 4 10's.

The Park City Police Department will be hiring in the near future (if the casino deal goes through). It is a smaller department but has all the same problems as the city does. They are considered a suburb of Wichita. I don't know what they start at.

The Sedgwick County SO hires about once every year or so. They start at around $15 hr. I would suggest looking in to them as I was wanting to get hired by them but they weren't hiring at the time. It is a pretty good solid department to work for.

All of these departments have websites with a lot more information on them....just google it.

As far as expierence I would see if you could get a reserve job with a department in your area. Any solid experience will be helpful when applying.

If you want more information let me know....you can pm me or email me.
