The position will be lots of secretarial type assignments. But saying that you will also get to help on a small portion of criminal case work stuff. Now I am in a small FO. If you are in a large office I would think it could be almost total secretarial duties ex..credit card paperwork, answering phone, front window, filing, etc. The job announcement sounds in my opinion more intel based work but reality is you will do little of that. Now saying all this I have worked for two other federal agencies and at this point I think the ATF is going to be great. Lots of opportunity for advancement it seems to the GS 13 level. I have really enjoyed it so far. I come from a Leo background almost 20 years worth of chasing crooks so it is a nice change for me.

As an IA you will NOT advance to a 13. It IS a LARGE MAJORITY of secretarial type administrative work. HOWEVER, a good IA makes life on the group a lot easier (as stated earlier).

The IRS position (Intel Research Specialist) is a sweet gig. More involved in investigations, still some administrative stuff, but also mission critical (just like the IA). The IRS is not sworn either.

In terms of competitiveness, is this job more helpful than being a local/state LEO in terms of securing an 1811 gig/FLEO? Do federal agencies typically like to hire within? Does being a federal employee with Top Secret Clearance hold more weight than LEO experience?

I know you have heard the old saying of foot in the door it applies here also. I say yes it does it helped me get where I am to this point. I know some agencies do internal hires only on some postings I had an 1811 spot in one and turned it down.

Looks like the entire position was closed yesterday and they are no longer accepting applications. If anyone hears anything please keep us informed!

I applied last year and just received notice from USA Jobs that posting was closed. This is the kind of work I am looking for. I will be done with grad school towards the end of this year, and I am too old to become a federal agent. I have worked the streets several years ago as a patrol officer in Middle Tennessee, and had to have double knee replacement under the VA so my cop days are done with. I am just looking for something to carry me into my early to mid 60s then retire.

If anyone has more information to add to past postings, or any helpful information, feel free to add comments.

So I just got an email saying I was in the "Silver" category and not referred for this job because only the highest and "gold" category people get referred..

Not sure how since I'm in the ATF Special Agent consideration.

What does the hiring process and background consist of? I know it's a TS clearance, so is there a poly or is that only required for 1811's?
