  • Investigative Analyst (ATF)

Has anyone applied for this? It says continuous recruitment until next year (7/2016). I applied a couple days after it posted (8/3/15) and it says my information has been received, but when do you think they will get back to applicants on their status?

I applied back in October and still says recieved.

I also applied to this announcement right when it opened. I am still "received" as well and glad to hear I am not the only one!

I saw on the ad it said there were cutoff dates of 8/30, 9/30 and 10/30..but never heard anything after those deadlines so I guess this is one of those things you just apply to and forget about?

I applied when it first came out and crickets are chirping! I emailed the POC and have yet to receive a response. Typical for the Gov.

If you DO in fact apply for this job, please understand the job description and perform the duties expected of you IF you get it! While you won't be doing much in the way of investigating, the IA is a critical part of our team and a good IA makes the groups life A LOT easier.

The POC is a person that wears multiple hats. Please excuse them if they didn't jump up and return your email right away. They could be on a detail, vacation, or doing something else which prohibits them from responding. If you have questions throw them up here, some of us may be able to help.

What's the difference between an Intelligence Research Specialist and an Investigative Analyst? Do they perform similar duties or are they completely different?

                  An IRS; https://www.atf.gov/careers/intelligence-research

                  An IA....
Provides vital investigative support toward the overall investigative mission by conducting trend analyses, statistical studies and special projects.
Summarizes reports and extracts essential information received from the intelligence community and other law enforcement agencies into single cohesive reports.
Develops supplemental visuals such as graphs, charts, etc., to be used in preparing cases for trials.
Maintains and develops a wide range of diverse contacts, sources, and fields impromptu phone and face-to-face contacts with the general public.
Conducts analytical research of firearms, explosives, arson, alcohol, and tobacco related data and generates informational reports and trend analyses pertaining to stolen firearms and explosives, firearms trafficking, alcohol and tobacco diversion, etc.,

I would say an IA has more administrative and secretarial duties than an IRS does. They both play vital roles in the bureau, but an IRS may be more "in the game" than an IA.

Do you know when they may begin running through applications and contacting applicants, if they haven't already and we just haven't heard anything yet? I saw there were three deadline dates in the fall time, however the ad states the recruitment is until July of next year. Thanks in advance.

No need to "go there". Just letting those who choose to apply to KNOW EXACTLY what the job entails. An IA is a critical part of our mission, and a great IA makes our job a ton easier. A bad one, not so much.

For instance, if you think this might be a "back door" to an Agent position, think long and hard. If these are your intentions, and you get the spot but are a slug and solely focus on "the next step", it WILL have a negative impact on the group and probably affect your chances at becoming an Agent.

Now, of course if you come in and are awesome, well, folks will speak highly of you and that may help your chances. Good luck with whatever path you choose!

Hey I had applied almost a year ago for a specific FO just started. The best advise I can give is be verrrrry patient. The staff in HR like FED stated wear many many hats and are very busy. I also noticed some of the offices listed in the current open announcement also had previous individual listings earlier mine for example is on the current east posting but obviously my office isn't actually open so not sure what's up there. Just some FYI. This is my third DOJ agency and so far my favorite. I feel like the agency is building a pool to pull apps from for IAs when needed to save time possibly so hang in there and be patient nothing moves fast in federal hiring process.

brownbear93, can you give a little insight into what a typical day in the life is like for you in this position?
