  • It's definitely no walking test...
I do agree that you should know what you're getting yourself into, but it doesn't mean is just super easy.

Even academy instructor told me your legs will be burning, so don't worry if you have to change feet.. I told him I was good but still.. It wasn't just a walking test.

Because they thought it was just super easy and they go and wing it.

And then there are the people who could have passed, but didn't practice and subconsciously touch a leg during the test...

And those who lack rhythm, like me, and go to fast at the beginning...

Some practice even for those in great shape is a good idea. But I guess I'm not a stud if I admit that it's not easy and I prepared for it.

Don't fall for the macho BS folks, prepare.

Annoyed, that's all. Saying that the step test is just a walking test is macho BS if I've ever seen it. It clearly isn't true and only serves to demean the process and those who didn't pass.

It is a moderately difficult test of endurance. It's not as difficult as other LE physical fitness tests and it's more difficult in a different way than others.

An LE agency full of marathon runners or meatheads would fail. They need people in better than average physical shape with the intelligence to do the day to day work that doesn't involve physical fitness; however, you need to be more physically fit than the average Joe on the street for that 1% when you need to get physical. But there is also a place in LE for the marathon runners and meatheads; you just don't want an agency of nothing but that.

I feel the tests designed for this position are valid to meet the end they seek to meet. This isn't a "running and gunning" position. This is 90% desk work as is most federal LE.

            • PT test

Here is what I have to say. I run five miles often, and under 40 minutes... standard for some U.S Army unit training program.... and I am sure I would have failed this step test if I had not prepared for it. The reason being is that during this test, I had to use a group of muscle that I did not use before for that length of time. The first time I tried doing the test on 18" step.. I was struggling.. it took a few sessions.. to get it down. Now the real test was on 16" step. a little easier but my body was used to the exercise by test day... it is just a different exercise and it caught some people off guard.. that's all.

My first run through, ICE contacted me to see doctors to get cleared for my back and psychological conditions since those were my biggest VA ratings. They just sent me paperwork for my doctor and psychologist to fill out and that was it.

Sir, based on your post above it seems that they did not ask you to see specialist for all the condition/VA ratings you have. They asked you for the most serious ones. Is that correct? I have some 10% and wondering if they wanted clarifications for those as well.

You said paperwork for your doctor to sign? Can this be done by a primary care.. or it has to be a specialist? In your case what did you do exactly. tks.

                • I see people talking about the step test and I wanted to give my input. Even if you are fit enough, the nervousness, anticipation, etc adds to this situation. When we were practicing, I was messing up and that practice wasn't even that long. As soon as the test began, I had no problems stepping in cadence. But let me tell you, my legs especially the left was dead to the point that it felt like a heavy piece of meat because I didn't want to switch and mess up the sequence..the last 2 minutes, I had to dig deep because I wanted this so bad!

With that being said, I didn't prepare for this test, but I stay fit. Cardio, weights etc and that helped.

So the step test is not hard but it's not that easy especially if your mental state is not that strong when it comes to pushing yourself!

I guess it depends. If they want you to see other doctors, they will send you pages to get filled out by a Dr "clearing you" as fit for duty. For me it was my back, psychological, and eyesight. If you get those papers, just get them filled out and send them back. If they don't send you this paperwork, just assume no problems have arisen....yet.

                            • For those of you guys going to the One Stop in LA Next week. Have some common sense please. Don't wear a suit and follow directions.

As far as the step test. When I took it 6 Years ago I used a milk crate to prepare beforehand.

                              • Milk crate isn't high enough.

But some practice is better than none.
